Picture discs can be very attractive when they are done well, and they are even more attractive when the sleeve is done even better. Such is the case with this picture disc of 'Cry' by Godley & Creme. You can not see it so well on this scan, but the transparent sleeve has five black squares and the disc contains the eight images that fit inbetween.
Of course I already had a copy of 'Cry', but I can never resist a good thing when I see it. And so, here's another copy of the single - but you'll have to agree that this one is a big improvement on the other one.

Cry - Godley and Creme
Trevor Horn must be one of the most impressive producers out there, as he's been responsible for so many great records. I am certainly not the only person to think this, since when he produced Godley & Creme's 1985 single 'Cry', it was played to death on radio and television at the time. So much so, that I became sick of the track altogether. Now, 25 years later, I finally brought myself to the point where I could buy and listen to it again.
The single reached number 8 in the Dutch Top 40, number 16 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and number 19 in the UK singles chart.

Wedding bells - Godley and Creme
The title of this song can be misleading. When you read 'Wedding bells', you expect a romantic song, but the lyric is actually about a man who wants to avoid those wedding bells. The song was taken from Godley & Creme's 1981 album 'Ismism' (released as 'Snack attack' in the USA).
While 'Under your thumb', also taken from the album, had already reached number 3 in the UK singles chart, this was another top 10 hit for the duo, peaking at number 7.

An Englishman in New York - Godley and Creme
The title of this single has become associated with Sting, who released his song in 1988. Eight years before that, Godley & Creme released their own 'Englishman in New York', a totally different song with comparable success. At least, in the Netherlands, where it peaked at number 3. In the UK, this single did not chart at all.
While the duo would become directors of music videos later on, this single was already accompanied by an innovate music video, directed by Godley and Creme themselves.

Under your thumb - Godley and Creme
After having been in 10CC for years, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the band to pursue other musical interests. They released seven albums as a duo, of which 'Ismism' (1981) was their fourth. It contained the single 'Under your thumb', which was their biggest hit in the UK, peaking at number 3. In the Netherlands, it did worse than previous single 'An Englishman in New York', whcih reached number 3 in the previous year (but did not chart in the UK!), but this single still peaked at a respectable number 18.
My collection: 7" single no. 593
