Det var en yndig tid - Katy Bødtger

At the beginning of this year I bought 'Mit potpourri', a 10" album by Katy Bødtger, which featured her 1960 Eurovision entry 'Det var en yndig tid'. One of the reasons (besides it being a very attractive item with a colour sleeve) was that the single would cost at least 45 euros. And certainly online you will need to pay something like that for a decent copy. 

Imagine my surprise when I saw this single for less than half of that amount at the record fair in Den Bosch last Saturday. And from a Danish dealer too! It was a lovely time.

Mit potpourri - Katy Bødtger

If you want to buy a copy of the single 'Det var en yndig tid', the song with which Katy Bødtger represented Denmark at the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest, you will have to pay 45 euros or more. By contrast, this 10" compilation LP, which includes the song, only costs a few euros. So obviously I went for the latter. 

It is actually a very nice collection of songs that presents the state of music in the early 1960's quite well. It all sounds ancient right now, but these were real instruments and a very capable singer. Katy Bødtger ended up in joint tenth place with 'Det var en yndig tid' at the Eurovision Song Contest, which I think is one of those inexplicable injustices by the international juries.

Så går vi til enkebal - Katy Bødtger

I haven't suddenly developed a taste for bizarre Danish songs (and the A-side surely is one), but this single by Katy Bødtger has a special attraction: as you can see, the B-side is called 'Popcorn'. And it is indeed a version of the Gershon Kingsley track, but, and this is where it gets interesting, with Danish vocals. 

Gustav Winckler wrote the lyrics for this version, but my Danish isn't good enough to understand what Katy is singing about. The single isn't very rare - it has already been listed on the Popcorn-song website, for instance - but it is surely one of the more quirky versions I've ever had the pleasure of owning.
