Principles of lust - Enigma

'Principles of lust' was the third single released from Enigma's debut album 'MCMXC a.D.'. The single version of 'Principles of lust' is actually 'Find love', part two of the album version of 'Principles of lust'. The song contains a sample of 'Justify my love' by Madonna. The cover includes a detail from the painting Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time by Agnolo Bronzino.

'Principles of lust' reached number 29 in France, number 90 in Germany and number 59 in the UK singles chart. This 7" single is pretty rare, I don't think I've seen it very often even in 1991, when it was just released.

My collection: 7" single no. 4460
Found: Fun Records, Berlin, received January 28, 2010
Cost: 3,3 euro
Tracks: 'Principles of lust (radio edit)' / 'Principles of lust (Jazz mix)'

Mea culpa (part 2) - Enigma

'Mea culpa' was released as the second single from Enigma's debut album 'MCMXD a.D.'. The title of the song comes from the Latin phrase for 'My fault'. The origin of the expression is from a traditional prayer in the Mass of the Roman Catholic Church known as Confiteor (Latin for 'I confess'), in which the individual recognizes his or her flaws before God.

The single reached number 4 in France, number 7 in Germany and Italy, and number 16 in the Dutch Top 40.
My collection: 7" single no. 4360
Found: Record mania, Amsterdam, December 30, 2009
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Mea culpa (Orthodox version)' / 'Mea culpa (Catholic version)'

Sadeness - Enigma

The 1990 single 'Sadeness' was written by Michael Cretu, Frank Peterson and David Fairstein. The lyrics are in Latin and French; the Latin text includes a quotation from Psalm 24:7-8. The gregorian vocals were mostly taken from the 1976 album 'Paschale Mysterium' by Munich choir 'capella antiqua' with conductor Konrad Ruhland, specifically from their track 'Cum angelis + Psalm 24(23)'. Thie samples were first used without permission, and after a lawsuit in 1994 the matter was settled by compensation.

'Sadeness (part 1)' was the debut single of Cretu's music project Enigma, which would continue for two decades and (so far) seven albums. Each one gets more predictable. This first release still sounds fresh, with quite interesting vocals by Cretu's wife, Sandra.

My collection: 7" single no. 1373
Found: Melody Maker, Den Haag, January 21, 1991
Cost: 6 guilders
Tracks: 'Sadeness (part 1) (radio edit)' / 'Sadeness (part 1) (Meditation mix)'
