Just an illusion (the 1989 remix) - Imagination

In the second half of the Eighties, it became a bit of a habit to remix everything that moved, basically. Old hits by Jackie Wilson or Marilyn Monrie, for instance, but also more recent songs fell victim to this. Even songs that were pretty perfect to begin with.

Imagination's 'Just an illusion' is a good example. There was nothing wrong with this Jolley and Swain production, but still Mike Pickering and Graeme Park thought they could improve on the track. The 1989 remix was released in, er, 1989, and failed to trouble the charts, predictably. The single was taken from a remix album called 'Like it is: hot sensational re-mixes', but this album also failed to chart. Sometimes people prefer to hear songs like they are.

In the heat of the night - Imagination

The title track from their second album 'In the heat of the night' was released as Imagination's third single from that album and their sixth single overall. It sounded a bit like a slowed down version of their biggest hit 'Just an illusion' or perhaps 'Body talk', but despite the familiarity of the sound - or perhaps because of it - it wasn't as big a hit.

In the UK singles chart, 'In the heat of the night' reached number 22, while peaking at number 48 and 14 in Germany and the Netherlands respectively.

Found: Backtrack, Antwerpen, June 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'In the heat of the night' / 'In the heat of the night (instrumental)'

Body talk - Imagination

'Body talk' was Imagination's debut single, released in April 1981. It was this song the trio Leee John, Ashley Ingram and Errol Kennedy took to producers Steve Jolley & Tony Swain on a demo tape. They recorded the track, and a hit was born.

The single reached number 4 in the UK singles chart and number 11 in the Dutch Top 40. Their debut album, also titled 'Body talk', was released a few months later and yielded two more hit singles: 'In and out of love' and 'Flashback'.

My collection: 7" single no. 1822
Found: Record Palace, Amsterdam, January 13, 1993
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Body talk' / 'Body talk (instrumental)'

Found my girl - Imagination

Released in 1985, 'Found my girl' was dedicated to Charlotte. The song was written by Leee John and Ashley Ingram, so without any additional information I can only assume that the girl meant something to one of them - or both. However passionate the message in the song, it left the audiences cold, as the single didn't chart in any territory.

The B-side of this single is a reggae-fuelled version of 'In and out of love', a far cry from the smooth soul track they recorded in the studio.

My collection: 7" single no. 4656
Found: All that music, Leiden, March 13, 2010
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Found my girl' / 'In and out of love (live)'

Flashback - Imagination

'Flashback' was released in 1981 as a single by Imagination. It was their third single overall, but also the third single taken from their debut album 'Body talk', named after their debut single which peaked at number 4 in the UK single. Like the second single 'In and out of love', this single peaked at number 16 in the UK singles chart.

Although I spotted two versions of this single when I bought it, the other one had a photograph on the sleeve, but the B-side was 'In and out of love', which I already owned as a single in its own right. The B-side of this Belgian pressing is 'Burnin' up', which could be considered an early house track for its repetitiveness.

Looking at midnight - Imagination

'Looking at midnight' was released in May 1983, while Imagination were very much a part of the chart scene. Produced and co-written by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain, the single followed a formula that had become familiar for the band: falsetto vocals and swirling synth sounds.

The single reached number 29 in the UK singles chart, but was the first after a long line of single releases to not chart in the Netherlands.

Last days of summer - Imagination

'Last days of summer' was released in the summer of 1985 as a single by Imagination. Their last hit was 1984's 'Thank you my love', and this new single would be the second in a long line of singles that would be unsuccessful in all territories.

The B-side featured a live recording of the earlier hit 'Shoobedoo da dabba doobee', recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in London.

My collection: 7" single no. 3107
Found: Big Company Records, London, May 13, 1999
Cost: 1 pound
Tracks: 'Last days of summer' / 'Shoobedoo da dabba doobee (live)'

Music and lights - Imagination

Even if their music was a bit formulaic, Imagination were masters of the soulpop genre. Or rather, their producers Tony Swain and Steve Jolley knew how to create a sound that the lead singer Leee John's voice thrived in.

'Music and lights' was another example of their brand of music, and successful it was too: it reached number 12 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 5 in the UK singles chart.

Found: London, October 28, 1997
Cost: 50p

Found my girl - Imagination

Released in 1985, 'Found my girl' was dedicated to Charlotte. The song was written by Leee John and Ashley Ingram, so without any additional information I can only assume that the girl meant something to one of them - or both. However passionate the message in the song, it left the audiences cold, as the single didn't chart in any territory.

The 12" single adds two live tracks into the mix, and if you think Imagination live is quite a boring affair, think again: the live arrangement of the earlier single 'In and out of love' is quite, er, imaginative.

My collection: 12" single no. 525

Thank you my love - Imagination

When Imagination left their production duo of Steve Jolley and Tony Swain behind, commercial success soon eluded them. However, 'Thank you my love', which was produced by Nigel Wright and Imagination, was an exception. This single was released in 1984 and reached number 22 in the UK singles chart.

The single was a new track on the compilation album 'Gold', which included all their previous hit singles.

Changes - Imagination

It's like the old saying: 'The more things change, the more they stay the same'. In 2010, as in 2009 and 2008, I will continue to publish information about my 7" singles and 12" singles. I expect to have put up my whole collection in a few months from now, after which I will always put up new acquisitions.

And so, this year should start with 'Changes', a 1983 hit single for the British soul trio Imagination, taken from their second album 'In the heat of the night'. The single reached number 31 in the UK singles chart and number 23 in the Dutch Top 40. As always, the single was produced by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain.

Found: Record Palace, Amsterdam, August 25, 1994
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Changes' / 'So good, so right'

Shoobedoo da dabba doobee - Imagination

Imagination's 'Shoobedoo da dabba doobee', released in the USA with the considerably duller title 'This means war', was released in 1984, ending a very successful run of chart hits for the band in the UK. This single failed to reach the UK singles chart and was also unsuccessful elsewhere in Europe.

Personally, I have always been fond of this track and especially its title. And it's one of those singles I've been searching for years, until I finally found it almost a decade after its release.

Just an illusion - Imagination

'Just an illusion' was written by Leee John and Ashley Ingram from the band Imagination, together with their producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. The smooth soul sound of the track appealed to a lot of listeners.

When the track was released as a single in March 1982, it became the band's biggest hit, peaking at number 2 in the UK singles chart and number 8 in the Dutch Top 40.

Hold me in your arms - Imagination

By the time Imagination released the 1988 single 'Hold me in your arms', not much was left of their popularity in the early Eighties, when they stormed the charts with the Tony Swain and Steve Jolley-produced hits 'Body talk', 'Just an illusion' and 'Changes'.

Although I like 'Hold me in your arms', I have to agree that there really isn't that much to distinguish this track from any other dance track at the time. Imagination had lost their identity, and as such, it was impossible for them to have another hit. The B-side of this single features a remix of 'Instinctual', their last single to reach (the lower regions of) the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 4299

Megamix - Imagination

In 1989, Imagination released a compilation album entitled 'Like it is: revised and remixed classics'. To promote the album, this Megamix was released. The single did not chart in any territory.

I don't know many megamixes that were chart hits. Perhaps it's because, as this single demonstrates quite effectively, a megamix makes the entire catalogue of an artist sound like they've only made one song: everything blends together too much. Still, it is amusing to hear four Imagination tracks within five minutes.

My collection: 7" single no. 4147
Found: Chelsea Records, Antwerpen, November 7, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Megamix' / 'Burning up'

State of love - Imagination

Taken from their fourth album 'Scandalous', 'State of love' was another single by Imagination produced by Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. The single only charted in the UK, where it reached number 67 in the singles chart.

With 9 out of the 10 singles released before this one having reached the UK singles chart, it's interesting to note that from the 13 singles that followed, only 2 charted in the UK - and none of them anywhere else.

Sunshine - Imagination

The trio Imagination became best known for the tracks they recorded with producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. When they parted ways with the producers duo, further chart success eluded them.

'Sunshine' is one of those latter days Imagination tracks, taken from their 1986 album 'Trilogy'. Produced by Richard James Burgess, the sound may be less lush and soulful, but it is a very decent pop track. It could have been a hit - but the general public decided otherwise.

Instinctual - Imagination

'Instinctual' was the last (minor) hit for Imagination. It was released in 1987 as a single from their album 'Closer'. The song was written by Arthur Baker and Paul Gurvitz. The single reached number 62 on the UK singles chart.

While on the album the band was pictured with three members, only two of them featured on this sleeve: Leee John and Ashley Ingram. I've no idea where Errol Kennedy went back then...

In and out of love - Imagination

Leee John (yes, with three 'e's!) and Ashley Ingram met in the late Seventies and formed a songwriting partnership, trying to start their own 'slinky, sexy and erotic' group, initially working in a short-lived band called Fizzz. Whilst auditioning for another short-lived band, Midnight Express, they met drummer Errol Kennedy.

Together they made a demo of the song 'Body talk' using the band name Imagination, which they took to producers Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. They agreed to produce their debut album, which was also named 'Body talk', and a story of success followed. The debut single 'Body talk' was a top 10 hit in the UK during the summer of 1981. Released in September 1981, their second single 'In and out of love' reached number 16 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 3833

New dimension - Imagination

Imagination released the single 'New dimension' in 1983. It met with a muted response from the record-buying audience: the single only charted in the UK (where it peaked at number 56) and Germany (where it peaked at number 61). In the Netherlands, it was the biggest success, reaching number 12. It was also their last hit in the Netherlands.

When I bought this single I didn't know whether I had it already. Maybe this is because many of Imagination's singles sound the same. It's hard to distinguish the one from the other. That's not to say that the songs are bad: this is another great, dynamic dance track.

My collection: 7" single no. 3821
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, July 2, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'New dimension' / 'I'll always love you'
