Sex cymbal - Sheila E.

My wife came home with a few singles, and I had almost all of them. Still, no harm, because it allowed me to ditch the copies that were in lesser shape, and there was one I didn't know. It was this song by Sheila E., released in 1991.

'Sex cymbal' was taken from Sheila's fourth solo album, the first not to be made with any input from her mentor Prince. It has a very prominent house- and dance-focused sound that was popular in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. It's not her best single, but it's a decent effort nonetheless.

The belle of St. Mark - Sheila E

Taken from her debut album 'The glamorous life', 'The belle of St. Mark' was a 1984 hit single for Sheila E., written and produced by herself. The single reached number 34 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 5 in the Dutch Top 40.

The single came out during a time when Sheila E. was still part of Prince's entourage. Around the same time, the duo had a brief romantic relationship, although Prince was also still involved with Susannah Melvoin, twin sister of Wendy Melvoin of Wendy & Lisa fame.

The glamorous life - Sheila E.

Sheila Escovedo was born on December 12, 1957 in Oakland, California (USA). She is the daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo. She became a drummer and percussionist herself and made her debut in 1976 with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson on 'Yesterday's dream'. Sheila met Prince in the early Eighties, when she was performing with her father. He enlisted her for his band and she played during the recording sessions for 'Purple rain' (1984).

Though taken under Prince's wing, she proved to be a successful artist in her own right. In 1984 she scored her first solo hit with 'The glamorous life', which peaked at number 7 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 in the Netherlands.

My collection: 7" single no. 1896
