City rhythm - Shakatak

Shakatak's 'City rhythm' starts with a fetching intro by a female voice, and then the song doesn't really take off but remains a bit middle of the road, jazzy muzak and all. Still, I thought it would be nice to have this single because it does remind me of all the hours I spent in front of the television while I should have been making homework. I guess Shakatak could take a percentage of the blame for my bad school results back then.

'City rhythm' only made it to number 77 in the UK singles chart but stayed outside the Dutch Top 40.

Easier said than done - Shakatak

Although 'Easier said than done' by Shakatak is hardly the best song ever, it was interesting enough to want to try out this 'special mix long version' when I found this 12" single. It's a mostly instrumental track after all, and I've nothing against a longer version of an instrumental track.

No wonder that this 12" single does exactly as promised: a longer version that keeps you listening. Nothing shocking, but pleasant easy listening.

Dark is the night - Shakatak

Shakatak are famous for their lightweight, coffee table music. 'Dark is the night' is a perfect example of this: there is a chorus, sung by a female singer, but there are no verses. Instead, instrumental passages should do it for the listener.

Released in May 1983, this single reached number 15 in the UK singles chart and number 21 in the Dutch Top 40.

Easier said than done - Shakatak

Bill Sharpe, Jackie Rawe, Roger Odell, George Anderson and Keith Winter formed the British jazz-funk band Shakatak in 1980. In 1981, they released their debut album 'Drivin' hard', from which the single 'Easier said than done' was taken. It gave the band their first top 20 hit in the UK, peaking at number 12. The single did almost equally well in the Netherlands, peaking at number 17.

The music of Shakatak is often described as elevator music. Indeed, originally I wasn't impressed by this single at all. After some time I still wanted to have it.
