Step off - Junior Giscombe

Junior Giscombe had his biggest success with 'Mama used to say' and 'Too late' in 1982, but all the singles he released next landed outside of the UK top 40. Until, that is, in 1987 when his duet with Kim Wiled 'Another step (closer to you)' made it to number 6.

Junior eventually switched to Kim's record label and in 1990 he released this single, 'Step off'. He wrote the song himself, together with Gregg Smith, and it's another example of his brand of funky music. The B-side is unfortunately less inspired.

Too late - Junior

In 1987, Junior Giscombe had a hit in the UK together with Kim Wilde, singing 'Another step (closer to you)'. In 1992, Kim Wilde recorded a song called 'Too late' on her album 'Love is'. And Junior recorded a song called 'Too late' ten years previous, released as a single in 1982.

It may be a bit farfetched but it was curiosity that drove me to buy this single. I wondered how this song would sound, knowing that Junior was in the business of creating funky dance tracks, and not - as was the case with Kim's 1992 track - plaintive ballads. This single does not disappoint. No-one does funk like Junior Giscombe.

Another step (closer to you) - Kim Wilde and Junior

Since today is Kim Wilde's 49th birthday, I thought it would be appropriate to post a single by her today. This is 'Another step (closer to you)', a duet with Junior Giscombe. The track was always going to be a duet, but when a demo version lacked soul, the idea to use Junior on it was born.

The single was released as the third single from Kim's 1986 album 'Another step', and became a top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at number 6 in the UK singles chart. When 'You keep me hangin' on' became a number 1 hit in the USA, the single was also released as the follow-up over there, but with much less success.

Mama used to say - Junior

Junior Giscombe debuted in 1982 with 'Mama used to say'. It was a number 7 hit in the UK, but also made it into the top 10 in the USA, which earned him a 'best newcomer' award from Billboard magazine. This flying start didn't help his further career, though: the only other top 10 hit Junior had in the UK was a duet with Kim Wilde in 1987 ('Another step (closer to you)').

I got to know the song because of an acapella rendition during a television programme. It was interesting enough for me to try and find out the original version.

Somebody - Junior

Junior Giscombe was born June 6, 1960 in London. In 1982 he made his debut with 'Mama used to say', which peaked at number 7 in the UK. Further big hits eluded him, with the exception of 'Another step', the duet he recorded with Kim Wilde, which was released as a single in 1987.
Before that, though, I found out about him because of the single 'Somebody', which released in 1984. The video featured regularly on music television stations. I finally found the single fifteen years later...
