Dynamite - Jermaine Jackson

Jermaine Jackson never achieved the same level of fame his brother and sister Michael and Janet did. But at least one of his albums was pretty successful in various territories: 'Dynamite'. The album reached number 19 in the US album chart and number 57 in the UK.

The title track was released as the second single from the album and managed to get to number 15 in the US Billboard Hot 100. It was successful in some European countries too. Further success would come to Jermaine with the next single, 'Do what you do' and the infamous duet with Pia Zadora, 'When the rain begins to fall'.

Sweetest sweetest - Jermaine Jackson

For a little while in 1984, Jermaine Jackson was just about as successful as his brother Michael. It seemed the world just couldn't get enough of Michael Jackson and so any record released by a sibling became a chart hit as well.

Jermaine released the album 'Dynamite' in February 1984, and all the singles taken from that album became hits. 'Sweetest sweetest', the first single from the album, reached number 52 in the UK singles chart and number 16 in the Dutch Top 40.

When the rain begins to fall - Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora

The Israeli millionaire Meshulam Riklis is widely credited for launching (or buying) Pia Zadora's career as a celebrity. He married her in 1977, and shortly after that she made her debut as the Dubonnet Girl, appearing in print and television commercials for the apéritif distributed by a company he owned.

He then financed the movies 'Butterfly' and 'Voyage of the rock aliens', in which Zadora had a starring role. 'When the rain begins to fall' was a duet of Zadora with Jermaine Jackson, recorded for the latter movie. The song was a big success in Europe, most of all the Netherlands where it reached number 1 in the Dutch Top 40.

My collection: 7" single no. 611
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, May 7, 1988
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'When the rain begins to fall' / 'Substitute'

Do what you do - Jermaine Jackson

After Michael Jackson's phenomenal success with 'Thriller', it seemed like all of his siblings wanted a piece of the pie as well. Janet Jackson started a very successful career together with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and Jermaine Jackson signed with Arista records to release 'Dynamite', an album featuring a couple of hit singles. One of them was 'Do what you do', which some say featured Michael Jackson on backing vocals.

The main revelation for me was the music video at the time. I was already familiar with the fact that belly buttons can be 'innies' or 'outies', but I'd never seen a spine so deeply hidden in someone's back (scroll to 3'21 to see this anatomical phenomenon). Meanwhile, 'Do what you do' reached number 4 in the UK singles chart and the Dutch Top 40.

My collection: 7" single no. 257
Found: LP Top 100, Den Haag, 1985
Cost: 5,5 guilders
Tracks: 'Do what you do' / 'Tell me I'm not dreamin' (Too good to be true)' (duet with Michael Jackson)
