Of course I already own a copy of Fischer Z's 'The Worker' - I bought it 30 years ago! - but this picture disc was just too beautiful to pass up. It's so beautiful, in fact, that there is even a movie of it on YouTube.
Fischer Z continues to tour and record albums, the most recent being 'Swimming in thunderstorms', released earlier this year. Their earliest work remains the best, in my humble opinion.

Room service - Fischer Z
I read in an article on Wikipedia that the songs written by Fischer Z's John Watts drew heavily on his experience as a mental health care worker. On the B-side of this single, entitled 'Limbo', he sounds like someone who really should be committed himself - but perhaps that was the intention. I remember I was really fascinated by this track back in 1980, and although I've had it on cd for several years, I was very happy to have found this single which features the track as well.
I was also intrigued by the label of the B-side, by the way: it does not contain any information except the logo of the record label. I suspect this is a mispressing. Since this single was not a hit, I can't imagine it's worth much though.

The worker - Fischer Z
The biggest hit by Fischer Z was 'The worker'. It peaked at number 53 in the UK singles chart and number 20 in the Dutch Top 40. The song was remixed for the single, putting the emphasis on the keyboard parts instead of the bass and guitar parts.
The song was one of the few singles during that time to go down in the charts after being featured in the BBC chart show 'Top of the pops'.

Marliese - Fischer Z
Fischer Z released their third album 'Red skies over paradise' in 1981. This was the last album released under the classic line-up, despite the departure of keyboardist, Steve Skolnik. The album featured many songs about politics and several references to the Cold War. After this album, band leader John Watts pursued a solo career.
'Marliese' was taken from the album and became the band's last hit. In the Netherlands, it reached number 31.

So long - Fischer Z
The original line-up of Fischer Z consisted of John Watts, David Graham, Steve Skolnik and Steve Liddle. They got together in 1979 and released three albums in three years. From these albums, a few classic singles were drawn, of which 'So long' is my personal favourite. A beautiful midtempo track with an interesting lyric and rather emotional vocals.
I lived with the single version of this for many years until I found out there was also a longer album version. I love them both.
