The big one - Black / King of emotion - Big Country

A collection of singles by Black can't be complete without those Italian promos that feature two (possible) hit tracks on one disc. In the case of 'The Big One', Black was coupled with Big Country's 'King Of Emotion'. In short: two tracks that had little in common, except that both the artists came from the UK.

Surprisingly, 'King of emotion' was the bigger hit of the two, reaching number 16 in the UK singles chart, whereas 'The Big One' only made it to number 54. In Italy it was the other way around: 'The Big One' reached number 17 whereas 'King of emotion' did not chart. I would be tempted to call that justice.

My collection: 7" single no. 6581

Tracks: 'The big one' (Black) / 'King of emotion' (Big Country)

Look away - Big Country

I bought a lot of 7" singles last year, but quite frankly I'd forgotten that 'Look away' by Big Country was one of them. And it's not even that long ago!

This limited edition double single adds a second disc with two instrumental tracks, displaying the Celtic influences that Big Country have always flaunted. The tracks come from the soundtrack of the movie 'Restless natives', which was released one year before this single, in 1985.

My collection: 7" single no. 4493
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 30, 2010
Cost: 2,5 euro
Tracks: 'Look away' / 'Restless natives' // 'Margos theme' / 'Highland scenery'

Look away - Big Country

'Look away' was the first single from Big Country's third studio album 'The seer'. Released in April 1986, it was the fourth UK top 10 hit for the band, peaking at number 7. The single was an even bigger success in Ireland, topping the charts for one week, and becoming the band's only number one hit.

I didn't like the song much when it was released, but now, two decades on, I think it's a great rock track. These days a lot of Eighties music sounds a lot better than it did back then. Must be because a lot of music from today is so crap.

My collection: 7" single no. 4108
Found: Empire Records, Den Haag, October 17, 2009
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Look away' / 'Restless natives'

Just a shadow - Big Country

'Just a shadow' was the third and last single released from Big Country's third album 'Steeltown'. Like the two before, the single was only a significant success in the UK. The single peaked at number 26 in the UK singles chart in January 1985.

Back then, Big Country singles really didn't excite me much. I took in most of my music through television and all of their music videos were very boring. It's only a few years later that I started to appreciate this song. Eventually, I bought the single.

My collection: 7" single no. 1305
Found: Record Exchange, London, October 15, 1990
Cost: 30p
Tracks: 'Just a shadow' / 'Winter sky'
