Love isn't love - Carola

Of course I already own a copy of 'Love isn't love', the song that propelled Swedish singer Carola into the consciousness of most of Europe after her successful Eurovision performance with 'Främling'. In the Netherlands in particular she made an impression with her Dutch version: 'Je ogen hebben geen geheimen'.

I recently found out that the song was also released in Japan, and as usual, the Japanese made an effort to package the single as attractively as they could. I have a particular fondness for Japanese singles and I am actually trying to get more Eurovision singles from Japan into my collection. The problem is that they're usually prohibitively expensive. Not in this case: the single arrived on my doorstep for less than I pay for my daily groceries.

Främling - Carola Haggkvist

Although I realise that I already had the A-side track of this single on the B-side of 'Je ogen hebben geen geheimen' by Carola, I couldn't resist buying the original Swedish release of her 1983 Eurovision Song Contest entry. With a different sleeve and the original Swedish version of 'Life' (on the B-side of 'Love isn't love') the set is now complete. Well, almost, because there is also the multi-language 12" version, which I am still looking for.

The song was a good success in various countries, thanks to the English (and Dutch!) version, but the original Swedish version remains the most charming one. Of course, Carola went on to win Eurovision by the end of the decade - but with a much less charming song.

Captured by a lovestorm - Carola

Carola represented Sweden for the second time during the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest. The song she performed was 'Fångad av en stormvind', a dynamic song with a rather stupid choreography. While she finished third in 1981 with 'Främling', expectations were very high indeed.

Carola came through: while she ended up with exactly the same amount of points from the international juries as Amina's 'Le dernier qui a parlé...', the rules dictated that the song that got the 'douze points' the most won. And so Carola went away with the victory. Unfortunately, I have to add, because the other song was the artistic triumph of the two.

Love isn't love - Carola

This is the English version of 'Främling', the song with which Carola represented Sweden during the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest. Presumably she tried to conquer the UK with this single, but it was an unsuccessful attempt. The single was also widely available in the Netherlands, but I'm not sure whether it helped in achieving number 7 in the Dutch Top 40.

While Carola didn't win Eurovision in 1983, she returned in 1991 to win the Contest with 'Fangad av en stormvind'.

Je ogen hebben geen geheimen / Främling - Carola

Swedish singer Carola was born on September 8, 1966. She represented Sweden in the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest with 'Främling', which ended up in third place. Carola proceeded to record three versions in other languages: 'Love isn't love' (English), 'Fremder' (German) and 'Je ogen hebben geen geheimen', the Dutch version which helped the single get to number 7 in the Dutch Top 40.

The album of the same name sold over one million copies in Sweden, making it the biggest-selling album in Swedish music history.

My collection: 7" single no. 2971
Found: February 21, 1998
Cost: 4 guilders
Tracks: 'Je ogen hebben geen geheimen' / 'Främling'
