Released in January 1984, 'Alle dagen dorst' was the second consecutive single by the Dutch band Toontje Lager to narrowly miss the Dutch top 40. 'Alle dagen dorst' ('Thirsty every day') was less inspired than the band's biggest hits and failed to capture the imagination of the record buying public.
The track 'Ben jij ook zo bang', released as a single in 1982, appears on the B-side of this single in a live version.

Als ik 'n meisje was - Toontje Lager
For a little while in the Eighties, the Dutch group 'Toontje Lager' were very hot. After the very successful albums 'Erop of eronder' (1982) and 'Stiekem dansen' (1983) the band suddenly failed to attract lots of attention. Their singles flopped and they didn't even record an album anymore.
In 1985, the band decided to call it quits. 'Als ik 'n meisje was' ('If I were a girl') was their last single release - and this one too failed to reach the Dutch Top 40.

Ben jij ook zo bang - Toontje Lager
The fact that Dutch pop was at its highest artistic level in the first half of the Eighties is proved once more with this single, released by Toontje Lager in September 1982. 'Ben jij ook zo bang' ('Are you so afraid too') is a fast-paced, almost manic track in which a sombre image of the future is painted.
The B-side is even better: a tale of sexual escapades set to great music. The guitar solo at the end is a treat. It's weird that this single didn't even manage to get into the Dutch Top 40.

Vroeg of laat - Toontje Lager
Here's another good Dutch song from the Eighties. Yes, the combination 'good' and 'Dutch' is a rare one in my book, but in the first half of the Eighties it seemed to happen more often than ever. 'Vroeg of laat' ('Sooner or later') is a combination of great synths, a nice drum rhythm, beautiful vocals and a rather accomplished guitar solo at the end. As a bonus, the B-side is an upbeat song in which an atheist ensures us that life is great after we die.
The single was taken from the band's 1983 album 'Stiekem dansen' ('Dancing secretly') but failed to reach the Dutch Top 40.

Net als in de film - Toontje Lager
Even if you're not able to understand the Dutch language, when you listen to this single it will be obvious from the music alone that the Dutch music scene was is pretty fine shape back in 1982. The instrumental break in 'Net als in de film' ('Just like in the movies') is up there with the pop classics of its time. And for the Dutch readers of this blog: the lyric of the B-side is a wonderfully cynical response to that old Dutch classic 'De glimlach van een kind' ('The smile of a child').
While Dutch music is much more popular these days, the quality is surprisingly low. Still, it reaches the higher regions of the Dutch Top 40 without much effort. By contrast, this excellent single only reached number 31 in July 1982.

Stiekem gedanst - Toontje Lager
Dutch music from the Eighties can be interesting at times. At the height of the synthpop age, even Dutch artists were inspired to make good tracks. (Which is interesting, because since then, nothing really interesting has happened.)
One of those bands was Toontje Lager. They released three albums during the Eighties, all of them filled with easily recognisable synthpop tunes. 'Stiekem gedanst' ('Secretly danced') came from the band's album 'Stiekem dansen' ('Dancing secretly'). It was their biggest hit, peaking at number 8 in the summer of 1983.

Zoveel te doen - Toontje Lager
Back to the Eighties, when Dutch bands were still able to produce something listenable. Toontje Lager was a band that was founded in 1978. They released their self-titled debut album in 1980, then followed up with 'Er op of er onder' and 'Stiekem gedanst'. Those two albums were very successful in the Netherlands, peaking at number 12 and 2 in the album charts respectively.
From the third album comes this single, 'Zoveel te doen' ('So much to do'). It's about being busy all the time, being too busy to have time to leave this place. It's simple synthpop like more bands were making at that time in the Eighties - but not so much in Dutch.
