Having bought the 10" single recently, I knew that I didn't have the normal 7" single yet. The thing is, the 10" single was the original release from 2002, whereas this 7" single was a re-release from 2003. But after a little research - well, one look at the Discogs website - I found out there was no 7" single in 2002. Which makes my Athlete vinyl collection almost complete in fact.
'You got the style' was a good success for the band, reaching number 37 in the UK singles chart and number 42 upon its re-release. Of course, their biggest hit 'Wires' was yet to come.
The band Athlete doesn't seem to exist anymore, which is a shame. During their career they managed to record a whole array of catchy songs, of which 'You got the style' was one of the first. This 10" single presents two versions of the song, plus a bonus track on one side, and a bit of etching on the other side.
'You got the style' was released as the band's first major label single in June 2002. It reached number 37 in the UK singles chart.
'Beautiful' was originally released as a single from Athlete's debut album 'Vehicles and animals' in 2002. It was re-released in 2010 when the band released their contract-fulfilling compilation album 'Singles 01-10'.
It's not entirely clear when this 7" single was made. The sleeve and label only state the year 2002, but I suspect this record was actually made in 2010. However, I can't be sure. I'm just glad I found this single as it's pretty difficult to find.

One of the standout tracks on Athlete's most recent album 'Black swan', 'The getaway' was released as an EP in the UK a few months ago. It was only released on the elusive 10" vinyl format, and as I never heard about its release I nearly didn't get it at all. A shame, because the bonus tracks on this EP are quite magnificent.
Like the previous singles from the album, 'The getaway' didn't reach the UK top 40. The band subsequently released a 'greatest hits' album which unfortunately was equally unsuccessful.
My collection: 10" single [unnumbered] Found: Recordstore.co.uk, received December 29, 2010 Cost: 3 pounds Tracks: 'The getaway (US radio mix)', 'Somewhere beneath my skin', 'Corner of my baby's eyes' / 'With you I never lose', 'The getaway (Athlete re-work)
'Superhuman touch' is the latest single by the English rock band Athlete. It was released in August this year as the first single from their new album 'Black swan'. After switching from Parlophone records to Fiction records, it was a good surprise to see that the 7" single format wasn't abandoned. Even better, the 7" single features an exclusive B-side track.
After the album 'Beyond the neighbourhood', which was a bit disappointing critically and commercially, it seems with this new album the band is back on track. I've already ordered the new cd!

'Tokyo' was the second single from Athlete's third album 'Beyond the neighbourhood'. While the cd-single contained four live tracks (including 'Tokyo' itself), this 7" single featured the album version of 'Tokyo' and an exclusive B-side track.
Released in November 2007, the single did not reach the UK top 100, partly due to lack of promotion and the fact that the cd-single EP sales were discounted as a result of UK chart rules.

Released as the fourth and final single from Athlete's 2005 album 'Tourist', 'Twenty four hours' was a real treat for fans. The cd-single featured two new tracks, whereas the 7" single, released as a picture disc, featured one of those new tracks plus another new track exclusive to the 7" format.
The single peaked at number 42 in the UK singles chart.
My collection: 7" single no. 3418 Found: HMV mail order, received November 2005 Cost: 3 pounds Tracks: 'Twenty four hours' / 'Stand in the sun', 'Before tomorrow'
'Tourist' was released as the third single from Athlete's album of the same name. Released in August 2005, it managed to reach number 43 in the UK singles chart.
This picture disc 7" single featured an exclusive track: 'Half light', the previous single, as performed during a radio programme on BBC6.
My collection: 7" single no. 3414 Found: HMV, London, 2005 Cost: 2 pounds Tracks: 'Tourist' / 'Half light (BBC6 music session)'
'Half light' was the second single from Athlete's second album 'Tourist'. It was released in April 2005 and peaked at number 16 in the UK singles chart.
This single was released as a 7" picture disc, including a remix of 'Half light' on the B-side, which did not appear on any other format (although a promotional cd-single with the track does exist).
When I heard 'Wires', I thought it was the debut single of the band Athlete. But I was wrong: the band was formed in 1999 by Joel Pott, Carey Willets, Steve Roberts and Tim Wanstall and they had already released several singles and one album, 'Vehicles and animals' (2003).
However, their second album 'Tourist' was their definite breakthrough album, reaching number 1 in the UK albums chart. The single 'Wires' was released in January 2005 and reached number 4 in the UK singles chart. The impressive song was written by band leader Joel Pott about his daughter, who was born prematurely. The single was released as a limited edition, including a poster of the strange cover image.
My collection: 7" single no. 3791 Found: eBay.co.uk, received June 23, 2009 Cost: 5 pounds Tracks: 'Wires (radio edit)' / 'Transformer man'
Part one of 'Hurricane' was already featured on this blog, so here is part two. I bought this one earlier in fact, so the search was on since then. This second part of the double single features a new track, which did not appear on the album 'Beyond the neighbourhood'. The single was pressed on orange vinyl, to add to the collectability even more.
As written before, the single only managed to reach number 31 in the UK singles chart.
My collection: 7" single no. 3486 Found: eBay, received December 20, 2008 Cost: 3 pounds Tracks: 'Hurricane' / '09/05 Speyside'
Released as the first single from their 2007 album 'Beyond the neighbourhood', 'Hurricane' did not receive as much success as previous singles 'Wires' and 'Half light', only reaching number 31 in the UK singles chart.
The single was released on two 7" singles, this one being the first. Pressed on blue vinyl, it came in a gatefold sleeve to house this disc and the second one, which was released separately. In the eighties at least one would be able to buy a double single for the price of one...
