Invincible - Pat Benatar

Pat Benatar had her biggest success with 'Love is a battlefield', but after that single a few more slightly successful titles followed. One of them was 'Invincible', a song taken from the soundtrack of 'The legend of Billie Jean'.

I owned the single since it came out, but I never bought the 12" single at the time. I bought it a couple of years ago and then it again disappeared anonymously in my collection. It's a shame, because this is a really decent extended version of that track.

My collection: 12" single [unnumbered]
Found: Kringloop Den Haag, 2014
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Invincible (extended version)' / 'Invincible (instrumental)', 'Heartbreaker'

Love is a battlefield - Pat Benatar

Years after I bought 'Love is a battlefield' on 12" single, I found the 7" single and decided to buy that one as well. It was cheap enough: the sleeve was torn, but thankfully the disc was still in good order.

A number one hit in 1984, I can still picture every second of the song in my head, having heard it so often back then. As a result, I don't play this single a lot. But when I do, it takes me right back to that year, watching videos on television.

My collection: 7" single no. 2465
Found: September 9, 1995
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'Love is a battlefield' / 'Hell is for children (live)'

We belong - Pat Benatar

Pat Benatar released 'We belong' as a follow-up to her highly successful single 'Love is a battlefield'. The track was taken from her sixth studio album 'Tropico'.

While it matched the success of 'Battlefield' in the US (peaking at number 5 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart), the song was less successful elsewhere, peaking at number 10 in the Netherlands and number 22 in the UK.

My collection: 7" single no. 2125
Found: Record Palace, July 30, 1994
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'We belong' / 'Suburban king'
Download: Album 'Tropico', including both tracks

Invincible - Pat Benatar

After the major worldwide success of 'Love is a battlefield', the rest of Pat Benatar's career must have seemed to her and the world as a relative disappointment. Whatever she did, it wouldn't measure up to that one big hit.

'Invincible' is a convincing rock track, which is part of the soundtrack of the movie 'The legend of Billie Jean'. The movie was expected to be a big hit. However, the reviews were poor, and it flopped in the theatres. Benatar herself has often spoken disparagingly about the film before launching into 'Invincible' in concert, calling it 'The Worst Movie Ever Made' on at least one occasion.

My collection: 7"single no. 338
Found: LP top 100, Den Haag, 1985
Cost: 5,5 guilders
Tracks: 'Invincible' / 'Invincible (instrumental)'

Love is a battlefield - Pat Benatar

Pat Benatar asked Mike Chapman to write her a hit song. He worked with his songwriting partner Holly Knight to come up with 'Love is a battlefield'. The song, which was included on Benatar's album 'Live from earth', was promoted with a powerful video, in which she played a teenage runaway. This video was on high rotation on television back in 1984.

The song was a number one hit in the Netherlands. I soon found out that the 7" single featured a heavily edited version of the song, so I opted for the 12" single. It was one of the first 12" singles I ever bought - but rightfully so: the extended version is much better.

My collection: 12" single no. 3
Found: Wouters, Den Haag, 1984
Cost: 14,95 guilders
Tracks: 'Love is a battlefield (extended version)' / 'Hell is for children (live)', 'Love is a battlefield (instrumental)'
