Stumblin' in - Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman

Getting two stars together to sing a duet, it must have been on Mickie Most's mind as a brilliant idea. He was, after all, the legendary boss of RAK Records, and 'Stumblin' in' was released on his label. Suzi Quatro was partnered with the lead singer of Smokie, and off they went. Of course the song became a hit. It actually became a hit again this year in a version by a certain Cyril, and this version irritated me so much that I had to reappreciate the original.

Because back in 1978, when this single was released, I thought it was a boring song. One might have expected Suzi to come up with something more exciting - after all, her career was based on more energetic stuff, and this song almost made me fall asleep. Thankfully, time has been kind to this song, and it has ended up in my collection.

If you can't give me love - Suzi Quatro

After having had several successes in the early Seventies with her particular brand of glam rock tracks, Suzi Quatro had a hard time finding any success after 1974. She still released records, but they all failed to chart. In the mean time, she worked as a session musician.

'If you can't give me love' was the single that changed her fortunes. It reached number 4 both in the UK singles chart and in the Dutch Top 40.

She's in love with you - Suzi Quatro

Suzi Quatro initially had a lot of success with her brand of glam-rock in the first half of the Seventies. Between 1975 and 1978, however, she had a hard time maintaining that success: only the 1977 single 'Tear me apart' had some moderate success in the UK and Australia.

In 1978, 'If you can't give me love' became a sudden success in those countries. The duet 'Stumblin' in', which she recorded with Chris Norman from the band Smokie, was even a success Stateside. Both tracks featured on the album 'If you knew Suzi'. A year later, she released 'Suzi... and other four letter words', which featured singles such as 'She's in love with you', which made number 11 in the UK and number 6 in the Dutch Top 40.

48 Crash - Suzi Quatro

I've already established on this blog that I've got quite an extensive Kim Wilde collection. But I have to add a dimension to that right here and now: I've also got singles of tracks that she has covered. Suzi Quatro's '48 Crash' was not recorded in the studio by Kim Wilde, however she did perform it live on several occasions in 2004.

When I visited Beanos in 2006, I used the opportunity to get my hands on this rare single. Unfortunately they didn't have a picture sleeve edition, but then those were prety rare in the seventies anyway.

My collection: 7" single no. 3439
Found: Beanos, East Croydon, London, 2006
Cost: 4 pounds
Tracks: '48 Crash' / 'Little bitch blue'
Download: Album 'A's, B's & rarities', including both tracks (part 1, part 2)
