Augustin - Siw Malmkvist

There's something odd about the sleeve of this single. With Siw & Lilian Malmkvist prominently on it with their names above, the song 'Augustin' seems to have been recorded by both. But upon further inspection it becomes clear that the sisters only recorded the two songs on the B-side of this EP, and Siw Malmkvist actually sings 'Augustin' on her own.

'Augustin' is of course a cover version of Sweden's 1959 entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, originally performed by Brita Borg. Which should tell you all you need to know why I wanted to have this single.

My collection: 7" single no. 7281

Tracks: 'Augustin', 'Det Är Min Melodi' / 'Cocktail Tango', 'Nya Fågelsången'

Eurovision '69 - Various artists

The Spanish record company Belter released this promotional EP featuring three Eurovision songs in 1969 and called it Eurovision '69. Fair enough - but why did they also include three other tracks on the B-side? Probably to promote their other repertoire as well, but it is a kind of baffling combination.

The nice thing about this EP is the fact that they included Spanish versions of Eurovision classics, and so  'Un jour, un enfant' becomes 'Un dia, un niño', 'Jedan dan' becomes 'Saludos al mundo' and 'Primaballerina' becomes, er, 'Primaballerina'. I'm not  so sure about the other three tracks, but I guess recipients of this promotional disc had no right to complain. It was probably a freebie anyway.

My collection: 7" single no. 7236
Found: Discogs.com, received 26 June 2024
Tracks: 'Un dia, un niño' (Frida Boccara), 'Primaballerina' (Siw Malmkvist), 'Saludos al mundo' (Ivan &M's) / 'Lala' (Michel), 'Mil veces volverias' (Madalena Iglesias), 'Bajo el cielo de Moscu' (Michel)

Primaballerina - Siw Malmkvist

Germany was represented by Siw Malmkvist at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969. She sang 'Primaballerina', a title that accurately descibes the subject of the song. Besides the original German version she also recorded the song in Swedish and Spanish.

This single contains the Spanish version, and fortunately the sleeve states 'en español', because there is also a version from the Spanish record company Belter that contains the original German version. Make no mistake: despite the title 'Me falta el botón', the B-side is in German.

My collection: 7" single no. 7056
Found: Record fair, Den Bosch, 11 November 2023
Tracks: 'Primaballerina (en español)' / 'Mir fehlt der Knopf'

På en gammal bänk - Siw Malmkvist

Although the sleeve of this single simply credits the song 'På en gammal bänk' to Siw, the label clears up the mystery: yes, this is Siw Malmkvist, the Swedish singer who was popular both in Sweden and in Germany. In 1969 she participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Primaballerina', but this single proves that she was still interested in the Contest two years later: 'På en gammal bänk' is a Swedish version of 'Un arbre, un banc, une rue', with which Severine won the Contest that year.

What's more, the B-side, 'Ett Rött Äpple' is a Swedish version of 'Pomme pomme pomme', another Eurovision song from that year. No wonder, then, that this single had to end up in my collection. Even if the sleeve isn't in the best of conditions...

Primaballerina - Siw Malmkvist

Germany was one of a few countries that didn't win that year's Eurovision Song Contest - 1969 is the year that came up with four winners after all. 'Primaballerina' was performed by Siw Malmkvist, a Swedish singer who was popular in Sweden and Germany during the Sixties. 'Primaballerina' ended up in ninth place in a field of 16 competitors.

Malmkvist went on to have some 40 hits on Swedish radio chart Svensktoppen and 20 on the German singles chart, she has altogether recorded about 600 songs (and has made recordings in ten different languages: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Dutch, German, English, French, Italian and Spanish) throughout the past five decades, which makes her one of the most productive and successful Swedish female singers.

Found: eBay, received May 24, 2019
Cost: 2 euro
Tracks: 'Primaballerina' / 'Mir fehlt der Knopf am Pyjama'
