Amiga Quartett - Milli Vanilli

This EP, released by the East German record company Amiga, presents four songs by Milli Vanilli. It includes their debut hit 'Girl you know it's true', as well as the debut album's title track, 'All or nothing'. The B-side consists of another hit song, 'Baby, don't forget my number' and the album track 'Hush', a cover version of the Joe South song.

For residents of the GDR (former East-Germany) these EP's were often the only way to buy music from "the West", as the country was pretty much isolated from western Europe. Obviously the EP's would only contain songs that wouldn't go against the communist party lines - whatever they were. These days, most of these EP's are sold for small amounts. Still, they are pretty enough to want to have them.

Girl I'm gonna miss you - Milli Vanilli

So Milli Vanilli didn't really sing themselves. Their music was produced by Frank Farian and the vocals were apparently performed by studio musicians who were too unattractive to become pop idols. And so Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan were put into the limelight.

Partly thanks to their appeal, 'Girl I'm gonna miss you' became a number 1 hit in Australia, Switzerland, USA and the Netherlands. In the UK singles chart, the single reached number 2.

Girl you know it's true - Milli Vanilli

The tale of Milli Vanilli is all too familiar: they had a lot of success in the late Eighties, then people found out that they didn't actually sing the songs themselves and started burning their records. I never quite understood that attitude: you like a song or you don't, and it doesn't really matter who sings them, does it? Sure, it is misleading, but Frank Farian was never the most honest man in pop: Boney M's songs were rarely sung by the band members either - and no-one ever complained about that.

Anyway, 'Girl you know it's true' is a fine example of a Milli Vanilli track. (And let's be honest: when you've heard one, you've heard them all.) This remix is of special interest for Boney M fans. What a coincidence!
