The eve of the war - Jeff Wayne

You wouldn't expect it when you see the sleeve (pictured here), but this is actually the Ben Liebrand remix version of 'The eve of the war' by Jeff Wayne. It certainly wasn't what I expected when I ordered this single: I simply got it for the fact that this is a Spanish promo 7" single, with just one track. That is, the B-side is empty.

Of course, the Ben Liebrand remix is wellknown - it was released commercially in 1989 around the time when Jeff Wayne's album 'War of the Worlds' was re-released for the first time. It certainly wasn't the last time: over the past four decades Jeff Wayne has released multiple remix albums, new recordings and toured the album several times, both in the UK and in Europe. The artwork of the album remains the most beautiful reimagination of H.G. Wells' story of invading Martians.

Burn it up (Mr. DJ) - Risqué

Although I already own a 12" single of Risqué's 'Burn it up (Mr. DJ)', there was still another one worth seeking out. This one is the original 12" single, released in the Netherlands when the single was released. And the remix is created by Dutch remix legend Ben Liebrand.

Fans will have been disappointed by the sleeve of this record, because it doesn't come in the same picture sleeve as the 7" single. But I do know that Risqué fan Jos will be excited by this extended version nonetheless.

My collection: 12" single [unnumbered]
Found: Discogs.com, received February 28, 2020
Cost: 3 euro

Popmuzik (Hip Hop 1989 Re-mix) - M

This single serves to confuse matters more than they already were... Back in 2009 I bought the 1989 remix of 'Popmuzik', a UK release that was a hit in the UK. A year later I found the Ben Liebrand single edit, released in Europe. That single did not chart.

Enter this UK pressing of a 'Hip Hop 1989 re-mix' - also subtitled 'Ben Liebrand Re-mix'. A different sleeve, but it contains the same remix found on the European release. All I can conclude is that the record company was pretty busy with this track, but in all honesty it's quite confusing. All I know is that this version did not chart - the other one did.

Endless road - Time Bandits

The list of Time Bandits 12" singles continues with this remix of 'Endless road', released in 1985. This remix was created by Ben Liebrand, just like the prevous single Reach out. You will find that this remix is different from the one on the other 12" single of 'Endless road'.

On the B-side, the remix of 'I'm only shooting love' by Steve Thompson reappeared.

Cost: 2,5 euro

Dancing on a string - Time Bandits

Having bought a stack of Time Bandits 12" singles recently, you're bound to see more tracks of the band on this blog. This is the 12" single of 'Dancing on a string', the first of two in fact. I bought the single in 2010 and was pleasantly surprised - and this 12" extended mix continues that trend.

The remix was created by Ake Danielson, Kim Haworth and Ben Liebrand. The latter is of course well known for his many remixes for Dutch radio.

Reach out - Time Bandits

When a 12" single announces that a special re-mix is provided by Ben Liebrand, you know you're in for a treat. During the Eighties, Ben Liebrand made a name for himself by making remixes of chart hits on a weekly basis for a Dutch radio programme. Also, at the end of the year he would make a 60 minute remix containing much of the best and biggest hits of the year.

'Reach out' was released by the Time Bandits in 1984, when they had their biggest success with previous singles 'Listen to the man with the golden voice' and 'I'm only shooting love'. 'Reach out' doesn't quite have the same impact but this remix does make the song that much more attractive.

Star - Time Bandits

There was a time when I thought 'Star' by the Time Bandits was one of the greatest tracks of all time. That feeling has subsided, but it is a pretty nifty pop song nonetheless. It wasn't a hit, which was kindof a shame, but I never actually knew there was a 12" single of this. And that the special remix on it was mixed by Ben Liebrand is a real treat too.

Ben Liebrand made a name for himself during the Eighties with his weekly remix on radio Veronica, and also managed to score a few hits of his own with remixes of oldies (some of which have featured on this blog in the past). This mix is certainly not one of his best, however it is quite a rarity.

Found: Velvet Vinyl Outlet, Leiden, October 8, 2010
Cost: 1,5 euro
Tracks: 'Star (special remix)' / 'Star (instrumental remix)'

Popmuzik (Ben Liebrand single edit) - M

Attentive readers of this blog will recall I posted a 1989 remix of M's 'Popmuzik' on this blog back in August 2009. I bought that one in the UK. It appears that the Netherlands also released a remix of 'Popmuzik' that same year, except this one was made by Ben Liebrand, the Dutch DJ who had become a household name during the Eighties.

Indeed, his remix is very different from the one on the other single - but less unsuccessful. While the UK version reached number 15 in the UK singles chart, this single did not chart in the Netherlands.

Dance this night away - Maarten Peters

The unsuccessful single 'Dance this night away' by Maarten Peters was his only one to be released as a 12" single featuring a remix. And it was quite a famous name who remixed his track: Ben Liebrand, who'd had several hit singles to his name during the mid-Eighties. Even he couldn't help this track.

The remix has all the hallmarks of a Liebrand mix: a new dance beat, several elements from the original song and a good groove. And an interesting buy: these days you can't find this 12" single anywhere.

My collection: 12" single no. 69
Found: Free Record Shop, Den Haag, 1988
Cost: 15 guilders
Tracks: 'Dance this night away (Ben Liebrand dance mix)' / 'Dance this night away (instrumental)'

Dancing in the city 1987 - Marshall Hain

In 1987, Dutch DJ Ben Liebrand remixed Marshall Hain's 1978 hit 'Dancing in the city'. It wasn't just a straightforward remix, as singer Kit Hain contributed new vocals to the track, adding a new verse. Gerbrand Westveen played the saxophone on this new version.

The single was released in the summer of 1987, but failed to chart.

Englishman in New York (Ben Liebrand mix) - Sting

'Englishman in New York' was originally a track on Sting's second album 'Nothing like the sun'. When it was released as a single from that album in 1988, it was moderately successful.

In 1990, just prior to the release of his third studio album The Soul Cages, Sting's record label licensed Dutch DJ and producer Ben Liebrand to remix the track and subsequently release it as a single. The remix played around with the introduction and some of the instrumentation, but the essence of the song remained the same. The new version was more successful, reaching number 15 in the UK singles chart in mid-1990.

My collection: 7" single no. 4600
Found: Velvet Vinyl Outlet, Leiden, February 26, 2010

Dolce vita (remix) - Ryan Paris

Ben Liebrand has made some very interesting - and commercial successful - remixes in the Eighties, but by 1990 it seemed like he was moving more and more towards the house and techno movement. This remix of Ryan Paris's 'Dolce vita' is an example of how bad it really was: all the original music was removed and a rapper was added for instant aggravation.

Still, this 1990 remix of 'Dolce vita' did manage to become a hit in the Netherlands, peaking at number 31 in the Dutch Top 40. The original version knocks spots off this one, though.

My collection: 7" single no. 4549

Every 1's a winner (Groove mix) - Hot Chocolate

Ben Liebrand has remixed many tracks since the early Eighties, and some of them were even released as singles. Some examples already made their way onto this blog, and here's another one: his 1987 remix of Hot Chocolate's 'Every 1's a winner'. It was released after his remix of 'You sexy thing', released in January 1987, reached number 10 in the UK singles chart.

This remix was less successful by comparison: it only made number 69 in the UK singles chart in April 1987.

My collection: 7" single no. 2321
Found: Record fair, June 3, 1995
Cost: 2 guilders

Call me (The Ben Liebrand remix) - Blondie

'Call me' was originally recorded as the main theme of the movie 'American Gigolo'. Producer Giorgio Moroder originally asked Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac to make a song for the soundtrack, but they declined. Moroder then turned to Debbie Harry and Blondie. The song was recorded by the band, with Moroder producing.

In 1988, a remixed version by Ben Liebrand taken from the Blondie remix album 'Once more into the bleach' was issued as a single. This single reached number 61 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 2401
Found: July 8, 1995

Ain't no sunshine (Eclipse mix) - Bill Withers

'Ain't no sunshine' was originally released in 1971 by Bill Withers on his album 'Just as I am'. He was still working at a factory that made toilet seats for Boeing 747s when he recorded the song. It was originally released as the B-side of the single 'Harlem', but when DJ's played the B-side instead, it became a huge hit.

Ben Liebrand made the 'Eclipse mix' of 'Ain't no sunshine' in 1989, after his remix of 'Lovely day' (another Bill Withers track) was a hit in 1988. This single was less successful, reaching number 26 in the Dutch Top 40 only.

My collection: 7" single no. 715
Found: Free Record Shop, Den Haag, January 6, 1989
Cost: 6 guilders
Tracks: 'Ain't no sunshnie (Eclipse mix)' / 'Ain't no sunshine'

Paranoimia '89 - Art of Noise

Art of Noise had a hit with 'Paranoimia' in 1986, a track featuring the vocals of the computer generated television personality Max Headroom. When the band released a greatest hits compilation in 1988, the album was promoted with several singles.

One of them was 'Paranoimia '89', a remixed version omitting Max Headroom's vocals and based wholly on the music by Art of Noise. The remix was made by Dutch remixer and DJ Ben Liebrand. The single did not chart in any territory.

My collection: 7" single no. 3960
Found: Record Exchange, London, August 5, 2009
Cost: 10p

The eve of the war - Ben Liebrand

Ben Liebrand found fame in the Netherlands because of his remixes of hits during the Eighties. A weekly show during nighttime and a 'minimix', broadcast every Friday night on the popular Veronica radio station guaranteed a following that was quite big. By the end of the Eighties, Liebrand started to record cd's of his own. This resulted in the 1990 release of the album 'Styles'.

A year earlier, Liebrand created a remix of Jeff Wayne's 'Eve of the war', from his millionselling 1978 album 'The war of the worlds'. The single didn't chart, but it did become a collector's item for fans of the musical version of the H.G. Wells book.

My collection: 7" single no. 2694
Found: Beanos, East Croydon, London, July 3, 1996
Cost: 1 pound

El Norte - Cock Robin

'El Norte' was the third and last single taken from their second album 'After here through midland'. Cock Robin had found some success in the Netherlands with four of their singles, but the second single 'The biggest fool of all' didn't reach the charts. CBS Records tried again with 'El Norte', and commissioned popular remixer Ben Liebrand to deliver some remixes of the track for the 12" single.

As always, Ben Liebrand did a very decent job with this track. He added lots of extra beats to the track to give it extra power. The setup wasn't successful: 'El Norte' flopped and Cock Robin were back into the studio to record their third album for CBS. It would be their last...

Precious little diamond - Fox the fox

The Dutch group Fox the Fox was formed in 1983 by Berth Tamaela and Robbie Brans. They were joined by Silhouette Musmin. Their first single 'Flirting and showing' barely missed the Dutch top 40, but in 1984 they had their first (and only) hit: 'Precious little diamond'. The song is a big success in Europe and South America as well.

'Precious little diamond' was remixed by Ben Liebrand, who had just become a famous dj and remixer thanks to his weekly 'minimix' on Radio Veronica. The remix is an extended version of the original song with extra instrumental breaks. Very attractive.

My collection: 12" single no. 459
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, November 22, 2008
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Precious little diamond (special remix by Ben Liebrand)' / 'Man on the run'

Find me (Odyssey to Anyoona) - Jam & Spoon feat. Plavka

Time can be cruel to pop songs. Some songs sound dated only a couple of years after they are released, others are truly timeless. I'd have to say that this one falls into the former category. Listening to 'Find me' in 2008 makes it a very 'nineties' track. Jam & Spoon have produced and created many tracks but they have used the same style pretty much all the time.

Still, 'Find me' is a nice popsong, and when I bought this promotional double 12" release, I was very glad. It contains no less than six versions of the song, plus two other tracks, and the heavy duty gatefold sleeve gives it a lush look. The fact that such releases sometimes turn out to be a bit disappointing in the long run is just a minor remark.

My collection: 12" single no. 219
Found: Kensington High Street, London, 1994
Cost: 6 pounds
Tracks: 'Find me (Fruhschicht)', 'Find me (House ideaz)' / 'Find me (Dedicated to the blondes)', 'Find me (Ben Liebrand mix)' / 'Find me (Odyssey to Anyoona)', 'Odyssey to Anyoona' / 'Drie Kraft der vier Herzen', 'The Tribe'
