The Beautiful South formed in 1989 when Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway left their band the Housemartins. They were joined by Sean Welch, Dave Stead and Dave Rotheray. On the band's debut album 'Welcome to the Beautiful South', Briana Corrigan was featured as a background vocalist.Their debut single 'Song for whoever' was sung from the point of view of a cynical songwriter who romances women solely to get material for his love songs. The single reached number 2 in the UK singles chart and number 17 in the Dutch Top 40.
