Spørg ikke, hvorfor... - Poul Bundgaard

Another Danish singer who recorded several covers of Eurovision songs was Poul Bundgaard. I bought one of his singles, 'Sig dejlige ting til mig', a year ago. At the same record fair and from the same seller I bought this one last Saturday. It's another disc with two Eurovision covers of the year 1964: 'Warum, nur warum' and 'Où sont-elles passées', songs from Austria and Monaco respectively.

Quite why Poul decided to cover these two songs remains unknown: you would think that the numbers 6 and 3 from the scoreboard were less popular than the winning song. But perhaps these two songs better suited his voice.

Tracks: 'Spørg ikke, hvorfor...' / 'Den forbudne frugt'

Lille marionet - Grethe Sønck

Grethe Sønck was born on 16 July 1929 as Grethe Ingeborg Nielsen Hald. She changed her surname to Sønck in 1968. In 1946, she won a talent contest, and in 1947, she became a singer at the Restaurant Sommerlyst at Dyrehavsbakken. As a revue actress, she started in Cirkusrevyen at Dyrehavsbakken in 1962, and later came to Nykøbing Falster Revue.

She starred in several movies and also recorded many singles and albums. Her repertoire included several Eurovision covers, including this one: a Danish version of Sandie Shaw's 'Puppet on a string'. Grethe Sønck died on 12 February 2010 of natural causes, aged 80.

National goes international

This is an interesting little EP. It was given away for free during the Firato, an audio and video fair held in Amsterdam between 19 and 29 September 1969. I actually went to the Firato once, somewhere in the late Eighties or early Nineties, when DCC's were demonstrated for the first time. It was an interesting fair, but these days events like this are not organized anymore, unfortunately.

Anyway, this EP comes from National, the biggest manufacturer of radios in the world, according to themselves. It includes instrumental covers of 'Lady Madonna' from the Beatles and 'L'amour est blue' from Vicky Leandros, as well as two lesser known tracks. As usual with discs like these, the performers remain uncredited. The Eurovision connection made me want to have this - obviously.

My collection: 7" single no. 6947
Found: Vinyl & zo, Rijswijk, 15 April 2023
Tracks: 'Lady Madonna', 'Oedo Nihonbashi' / 'L'amour est bleu', 'Suzuran'

Come running - Marty Wilde

Although picture sleeves were very rare in the 1960's, I still have this EP of Marty Wilde featuring his January 1962 release 'Come running' with a great picture sleeve. How come? I don't know, but this is a very nice selection of songs and you could almost qualify this as a mini-greatest hits compilation.

Besides 'Come running', this EP also features the theme song of the movie 'The Hellions', in which Marty appeared as an actor as well as providing this song, and 'Tomorrow's clown', which reached number 33 in the UK singles chart. The B-side of the original single of 'Come running', 'Ev'ryone' appears on this EP as well.

Laiskotellen - Lasse Mårtenson

Lasse Mårtenson represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 with 'Laiskotellen'. The song was composed by Mårtenson and lyrics by Sauvo Puhtila. The song finished seventh in the competition,  organized in Copenhagen, and collected nine points. Finland received three points each from Denmark, Norway and Great Britain. The song thus became, along with Marion Rung's "Tipi-ti", the most successful Finnish Eurovision song up to that point.

My copy of 'Laiskottellen' came without a picture sleeve as was habitual at the time. I received my copy from a Finnish dealer on Discogs, one of very few copies on sale in recent times.

Tracks: 'Laiskotellen' / 'Ehkä kerran'

Eurovisão 1966 - Isabel Fontes

I do love covers of Eurovision songs, for some reason, and sometimes there's a particular twist that really interests me. This EP features not one, but four Eurovision covers, all from the year 1966, in Portuguese. It includes the winning song from that year, 'Merci Chérie' (Austria), 'Dio, come ti amo' (Italy), 'Ne vois-tu pas?' (Switzerland) and 'Yo soy aquel' (Spain).

The EP was recorded by Isabel Fontes, a Portuguese singer who has gone missing in the mists of time. A listing on Discogs reveals that she released three EP's between 1966 and 1977, but Wikipedia has no information about her at all. These days, Isabelle Fontes is a Brazilian model who lives in the USA.

Tracks: 'Deus, como te amo', 'Mas, tu nao ves?' / 'Merci Cheri', 'Eu sou aquela'

Près de ma rivière - Robert Cogoi

The Dutch 'favorieten expres' version of 'Près de ma rivière' appeared on this blog almost a decade ago, but recently I acquired the French 4 track EP, which is worth featuring here because it contains four tracks instead of just two, and it comes in a beautiful cover. Also, three of the four tracks don't appear on that other single.

Robert appeared on the Eurovision stage in 1964. As a result, his performance has been lost in time, because along with the very first edition in 1956 the Eurovision Song Contest of 1964 was not properly stored in a video archive.

My collection: 7" single no. 6910
Found: 33|45 Records, Den Haag, 10 March 2023
Tracks: 'Près de ma rivière', 'Present'moi' / 'Fille du soleil', 'Toute une vie'

Vielleicht geschieht ein Wunder - Carmela Corren

Carmela Corren (née Bizman, 13 February 1938 – 15 January 2022) was an Israeli singer and actress. She dreamed of being a dancer, but switched to singing in the wake of an injury. American television producer Ed Sullivan discovered her in 1956 during a work venture in Jerusalem. Corren, just out of military service, was persuaded to come to New York to appear on his show. She later toured South Africa with Cliff Richard and sang in English clubs. Later, she starred in several films and television productions.

With the beginning of the 1960s, Corren became well-known in Germany, as well as in Switzerland and Austria. In 1963, she represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song 'Vielleicht geschieht ein Wunder', finishing in seventh place.

Arrivederci Franz - Birthe Kjaer

Although Danish singer Birthe Kjaer didn't get to represent her country at the Eurovision Song Contest until 1989 with the classic 'Vi maler byen rød', her interest in the competition started a lot earlier. It is evidenced on this single from 1968.

Although 'Arrivederci Franz' is an original song, the B-side is actually a cover version of the Eurovision song 'Ein Hoch der Liebe', performed for Germany by Wencke Myhre. Thøger Olesen provided the Danish lyrics for Birthe's version.

Medley no. 40 - Draaiorgel "De Arabier"

Dutch barrel organs are a bit of cultural heritage that mostly cause irritation when they're on the street these days. Back in the Seventies and earlier, people weren't so involved in Walkmans, ipods or iphones, and a bit of music was more appreciated. So much so, that the sound of these barrel organs was even recorded and released on singles.

Some of these singles are of special interest to me, for there's a bit of Eurovision on them. This EP is a good example: it finishes (on side B) with a version of 'Non ho l'eta', the only good Italian Eurovision winner (unless you think Toto Cotugno or Måneskin actually contributed beautiful melodies to Eurovision history).

My collection: 7" single no. 6895
Found: Record fair, Rotterdam, 4 March 2023
Tracks: 'De winter was lang / Zondag in Amsterdam / Gib mir dein Wort' / 'Vous permettez monsieur / Ik heb 't geluk besteld / Non ho l'eta'

En gång i Stockholm - Monica Zetterlund

Monica Zetterlund was born as Eva Monica Nilsson on 20 September 1937. During her lifetime, she starred in over 10 Swedish film productions and recorded over 20 studio albums.

Her long career also included the song 'En gång i Stockholm', a jazz ballad with which she represented Sweden in the 1963 Eurovision Song Contest. She finished last, however and scored nul points, but remained successful in Sweden.

It was quite difficult to find a good copy of this single for a reasonable price, so I had to make do with this one, which comes without the four prong centre.

Mit potpourri - Katy Bødtger

If you want to buy a copy of the single 'Det var en yndig tid', the song with which Katy Bødtger represented Denmark at the 1960 Eurovision Song Contest, you will have to pay 45 euros or more. By contrast, this 10" compilation LP, which includes the song, only costs a few euros. So obviously I went for the latter.

It is actually a very nice collection of songs that presents the state of music in the early 1960's quite well. It all sounds ancient right now, but these were real instruments and a very capable singer. Katy Bødtger ended up in joint tenth place with 'Det var en yndig tid' at the Eurovision Song Contest, which I think is one of those inexplicable injustices by the international juries.

My collection: 10" single [unnumbered]
Found: Discogs.com, received 25 February 2023
Tracks: 'To rode roser', 'Min barndoms klokker', 'Visne roser', 'Fiskerpigens sang', 'Det var en yndig tid' / 'Sa laenge du er til', 'Bla viol', 'Somand, mon du dr
ømmer?', 'Jeg elsker dig fordi', 'Farvel Jimmy, farvel'

Hush - Tommy Körberg et al.

EP's like this were quite popular in the Sixties and Seventies, because it was a way to own several hits for a reduced price. The only downside was that they were not the original versions of the hits, but rather recorded by other artists.

This Swedish EP is a bit weird, because it features Tommy Körberg quite prominently on the front sleeve. Tommy, of course, went on to become quite a wellknown Swedish performer, representing Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969 and 1988. On this disc he performs a version of the Deep Purple song 'Hush'. Another attraction is Sue Miller's version of the Marty Wilde song 'I'm a tiger', made famous by Lulu. And that, of course, is the reason I bought this disc. There's an interesting version of 'Son of a preacher man' by Martha Dove. And finally there's an interesting song called 'Lord of the ring', which indeed is a musical retelling of the Tolkien story.

La, la, la (French version) - Joan Manuel Serrat

After the original version and the Italian version, I found the French version of 'La, la, la' by Joan Manuel Serrat recently. Inevitably I started to compare the three sleeves and I have to say that this one is the ugliest of the three.

As for the French version, obviously it is beautiful. Somehow Joan Manuel Serrat manages to pull off singing like he's a French chansonnier. This third single is a nice addition to my collection of versions, now there's only his Portuguese and English versions to go...

Go now - Tin Machine / Moody Blues

This 'cover to cover' single features two versions of the song 'Go now': the original by the Moody Blues and a live cover version by Tin Machine, the band featuring David Bowie, recorded at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo on 17 February 1992. The Moody Blues version is actually also a live version, recorded during a radio session for the BBC in April 1965.

It has to be said: there is every reason to listen to the B-side, whereas the A-side is pretty awful. For some reason there are people who think that Tin Machine was one of the best things David Bowie ever did, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Another curiosity about this single: it was pressed on red vinyl and the number on the back sleeve reminds me that this is number 553 of a "limited edition of only 500". Right.

Found: Discogs.com, received 17 February 2023

The wages of love - Muriel Day

For a long time this single was on my wish list. It's the last single that I needed to complete the Eurovision Song Contest 1969 - the legendary edition with four winners. The Irish entry by Muriel Day was hard to find, because there aren't many copies of the original Irish pressing for sale - and the few that are available are offered for ridiculous prices.

Enter Portugal. I bought a few singles from a Portuguese seller and he had a copy of the Portuguese pressing on offer. As you can see, it comes with an attractive - if confusingly coloured - picture sleeve. 'The wages of love' was one of the less successful entries of 1969, ending up in tenth place in a field of sixteen competitors.

Tracks: 'The wages of love' / 'Thinking of you'

La, la, la [Italian version] - Joan Manuel Serrat

Joan Manuel Serrat was the original performer of 'La, la, la', before he was replaced by Massiel after he announced that he would only perform his song in Catalan - something that was unacceptable in Spain at the time.

His refusal to perform the song in any other language at the Eurovision Song Contest is all the more amazing when you realize that he actually recorded the song in several other languages. And this is one of them: the Italian version of 'La, la, la'. And yes, it does matter, because despite the simple title of the song it does actually contain a few wordy verses.

Found: Discogs.com, received 31 January 2023
Tracks: 'La, la, la [Italian version]' / 'Poema d'amore'

Quel coeur vas-tu briser? - Geraldine

'Quel cœur vas-tu briser' was the Swiss entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1967 in Vienna, performed by Géraldine Gaulier. The song is a ballad in which Géraldine asks a former lover whose heart he is going to break now that hers no longer beats for him. She tells him that she has forgotten him and asks him who will be the next victim of his false passions.

This EP features four songs by Géraldine, and they are quite varied. 'Jimmy' features rather weird vocals, whereas 'Neiges de printemps' is actually a very nice song. As for the title track, it finished in last place with zero points - which pretty much tells you how most juries felt about this song. It's actually not that bad.

Biały Krzyż - Czerwone gitary

Although most Polish singles I've posted here are from the Eighties, here is something from the Sixties. Czerwone gitary is a Polish rock/pop band, founded in 1965, which had its biggest outside success in the German Democratic Republic. In Poland known as Czerwone Gitary (Red Guitars), they performed numerous songs in German as well and consequently released them using a German name, Rote Gitarren.

'Biały Krzyż' was released in 1968. Back then the band consisted of Seweryn Krajewski (guitar, keyboards, lead vocals), Bernard Dornowski (guitar, vocals), Jerzy Skrzypczyk (drums, vocals) and Krzysztof Klenczon (guitar, harmonica). Remarkably, their last album was released in 2015 and they are still touring.

Oração - António Calvário

Most people would think that the first ten years of the Eurovision Song Contest were pretty dull. Well, except my father, who thought that all the music made after the 1950's was bad. I grew to appreciate the music of the Fifties and Sixties later in life, and I have grown a pretty impressive Eurovision collection of singles as you can see on this blog.

A recent acquisition is this Portuguese song from 1964. António Calvário sang 'Oração' ('Prayer') and recorded an EP with three more songs. Like most Portuguese songs, it didn't win but ended up in 13th place among 16 participants.

My collection: 7" single no. 6829
Found: Discogs.com, received 4 January 2023
Tracks: 'Oração', 'Notre dame d'amour' / 'Alma de boémio', 'Tricana'
