All or nothing - Fiction Factory

When I posted this blog about the 12" single of Fiction Factory's 'Ghost of love', Laurent from Belgium pointed out that there was another single by this excellent band called 'All or nothing' with an unreleased B-side track, 'Dreaming of someone'. I didn't know this, but it was obviously interesting because I haven't heard anything by the band I didn't like.

I was pleasantly surprised last week when I found this promotion copy of the single. There is a version with a picture sleeve, but in the absence of that, a promo copy is always nice to have. And of course, the track is good, but the B-side is even better. That's my opinion, of course...

Ghost of love - Fiction Factory

Readers of this blog have been able to follow the course of my Fiction Factory collection over the years. I had the 12" single of '(Feels like) heaven' for a long time, then I bought the 7" single of 'Ghost of love' in April 2009, a year later I found the 7" single of '(Feels like) heaven' and now I finally have the 12" single of 'Ghost of love' as well.

This disc features a nice extended version of the title track as well as two B-sides. It's made in the best Eighties traditions: big drums, clear melodies and a remarkable vocal. The band released four more singles plus two albums, so it looks like there's some more collecting to do in future years. At this rate, it should take me about two decades.

My collection: 12" single no. 610
Found: Plaatboef, Den Haag, December 5, 2011
Cost: 2,5 euro
Tracks: 'Ghost of love (extended)' / 'The other side of grey', 'Old game blue flame'

(Feels like) Heaven - Fiction Factory

'(Feels like) Heaven' is one of the big pop standards of the eighties. It was released by Fiction Factory in early 1984. It was the band's only big hit, reaching number 6 in the UK singles chart, and number 12 in the Dutch Top 40.

I also have the 12" single in my collection, but whenever I came across the 7" single I always thought I already had it. There was some doubt when I bought it this time, but I finally managed to pull it off and buy the damn thing.

My collection: 7" single no. 4748
Found: Record fair, Rijswijk, April 5, 2010
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: '(Feels like) Heaven' / 'Everyone but you'

Ghost of love - Fiction Factory

Fiction Factory are best known for their Eighties classic '(Feels like) Heaven'. I was surprised to find out that I only have the 12" single of that song, so I started looking out for the 7" single. So today I found the follow-up: 'Ghost of love'. This single peaked at number 64 in the UK but did not chart in the Netherlands.

Still, it's got the same synthpop edge of early Eighties material and the vocals by Kevin Patterson are just as striking as they are on '(Feels like) Heaven'. A great find.

(Feels like) Heaven - Fiction Factory

Fiction Factory were a British band, formed in the mid-1980's. Kevin Patterson, Eddie Jordan and Chic Medley were playing in a band called The Rude Boys, a skinhead ska band based in Perth, Scotland. After they left that band, they wanted to keep writing songs but were fed-up with live performances. With no name for this project, the first song Kevin and Eddie wrote for it was '(Feels Like) Heaven' in the space of roughly half a day. From a list of names that Chic had drawn up, Fiction Factory was chosen: firstly, because of the perceived falseness of the music scene and its reliance on pretty faces, the project was originally going to be fronted by nice-looking people who had nothing to do with the songwriting or performance of the music; secondly, the hope was that they would write music for themselves, other artists and maybe even films.

'(Feels like) Heaven' is one of the big pop standards of the eighties. It got to number 6 in the UK singles chart, and number 12 in the Dutch Top 40.
