Verlieben verlieren - Münchener Freiheit

'Verlieben verlieren' can be translated as 'loving and losing', which qualifies this song as a story everyone has gone through at one point or another. It's a pleasant popsong and the B-side is a nice bonus, as it holds a remix of the A-side track.

It's another single from Münchener Freiheit's 1989 album 'Purpurmond', and this wasn't a hit either.

My collection: 7" single no. 5028
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 29, 2011
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Verlieben verlieren' / 'Verlieben verlieren (Rhythm mix)'

Ich will dich nochmal - Münchener Freiheit

One of many Münchener Freiheit singles I bought recently, 'Ich will dich nochmal' was taken from their 1989 album 'Purpurmond'. Produced, as usual, by Armand Volker, the single didn't trouble the charts, which must have been a disappointment after the success of 'Keeping the dream alive' a year earlier.

The pop song is pleasant but forgettable. The same could be said of more of their singles, actually...

My collection: 7" single no. 5029
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 29, 2011
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Ich will dich nochmal' / 'Lass mich nie mehr los'

Herzschlag ist der Takt - Munchener Freiheit

The German band Münchener Freiheit released their third album 'Herzschlag einer Stadt' in 1984. The Neue Deutsche Welle, which had launched many German bands in the early Eighties, was almost over, but they finally managed to hit success with this album and the single 'Oh baby', a top 30 hit in Germany.

The next single was a remix version of 'Herzschlag ist der Takt', released in early 1985. Unfortunately, this single did not repeat the success of 'Oh baby'.

My collection: 7" single no. 5030
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 29, 2011
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Herzschlag ist der Takt' / 'Keiner hat mich gewarnt'

So heiss - Münchener Freiheit

'Keeping the dream alive' is perhaps Münchener Freiheit's biggest hit, and it was taken from their 1988 album 'Fantasy'. That album was released in English and in German. The German version was entitled 'Fantasie' and several singles were taken from that one.

'So heiss' was released in Germany with the same kind of sleeve as 'Keeping the dream alive'. The design was only slightly different. All this to cover the fact that there really isn't that much to report about this single. It is a nice song, that's all.

My collection: 7" single no. 5026
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 29, 2011
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'So heiss' / 'Lass es einfach geschehn'

Es gibt kein nächstes mal - Münchener Freiheit

Released in 1986, 'Es gibt kein nächstes mal' ('There is no next time') is a single by the German band Münchener Freiheit that was successful in Germany only. It was taken from the compilation album 'Von Anfang an'.

Living up to its title, the album contained a selection of new singles, a previously unreleased live version of 'Zeig mir die Nacht' (from the album 'Umsteiger'), two remixes and the occasional track from their previous two albums. Its success was due largely to its two original hit singles, 'Ohne Dich (schlaf' ich heut' nacht nicht ein)' and 'Tausendmal Du'.

My collection: 7" single no. 5024
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 29, 2011
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Es gibt kein nächstes mal' / 'Wenn das so einfach ist...'

Diana - Münchener Freiheit

'Diana' was the fourth and last single from Münchener Freiheit's 1988 album 'Fantasie'. It didn't chart, not even in their homeland Germany. Maybe it's because this track does not contain much surprises when compared to other songs from the band. The public probably decided they'd had enough.

This single got me thinking whether I actually know any Dianas. I realised that I've only known one Diana - and that was 20 years ago.

My collection: 7" single no. 4308
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, November 21, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Diana (single remix)' / 'Land der Fantasie'

Kissed you in the rain - Freiheit

'Kissed you in the rain' was the second single taken from Freiheit's 1988 album 'Fantasy'. As always, the track was produced by Armand Volker. The single was a success in Germany but in other countries it did not chart.

The release of this single effectively ended the band's international career. They are still recording, but they have returned to German-language songs, as in their home country they remained popular.

My collection: 7" single no. 3309
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, February 24, 2001
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'Kssed you in the rain' / 'Moonlight'

Keeping the dream alive - Freiheit

Taken from the album 'Fantasy', 'Keeping the dream alive' is the English-language version of 'So lang' man Träume noch leben kann'. This single became the band's sole hit in the UK, reaching number 14 in the UK singles chart.

Like its German counterpart, the track was performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Jackson Singers. It was one of my favourite tracks from 1989, even though it was released in late 1988.

My collection: 7" single no. 701
Found: Free Record Shop, Den Haag, December 15, 1988
Cost: 6 guilders
Tracks: 'Keeping the dream alive' / 'The land of fantasy'

So lang' man träume noch leben kann - Münchener Freiheit

'So lang' man träume noch leben kann' is a fine piece of orchestral pop, performed by Münchener Freiheit with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Jackson Singers. In the English-speaking world this track is better known as 'Keeping the dream alive', but this German version was recorded for their home turf.

The single was recorded in three separate location, the back of the sleeve reveals: Münchener Freiheit were recorded in Weryton Studios in Cologne, the Jackson Singers were recorded at Far Music-Studio in Rosbach and the London Symphony Orchestra, led by Andrew Powell, were recorded at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

My collection: 7" single no. 3275
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, November 11, 2000
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'So lang' man träume noch leben kann' / 'So lang' man träume noch leben kann (instrumental version)'

Play it cool - Freiheit

The German band Münchener Freiheit started their international career in 1987 with an English language album entitled 'Romancing in the dark'. The single 'Play it cool' was taken from this album. It showcased their slight formulaic but effective pop.

The single was very successful in Europe, reaching number 3 in the Netherlands and top 10 in various other European countries. It was another one of those singles I didn't buy because it was played so often on the radio - only years later I still wanted to get my hands on a copy.

My collection: 7" single no. 1856
Found: Concerto, Amsterdam, January 30, 1993
Cost: 3 guilders
Tracks: 'Play it cool' / 'Hide away'

Tausendmal du - Münchener Freiheit

Taken from their debut album 'Von Anfang an', 'Tausendmal du' became Münchener Freiheit's first hit outside of Germany. The single entered the Dutch Top 40 in June 1986 and peaked at number 28 during its five week chart run.

The song would be re-recorded in English as 'Baby it's you' two years later, aiming for more international success.

My collection: 7" single no. 2952
Found: February 7, 1998
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Tausendmal du' / 'Kalt oder heiss'

Ohne dich (schlaf ich heut nacht nicht ein) - Münchener Freiheit

The band Münchener Freiheit, composed of Stefan Zauner, Aron Strobel, Rennie Hatzke, Michael Kunzi and Alex Grünwald formed in the early Eighties. Between 1982 and 1985, they released three studio albums in German. The single 'Ohne dich (schlaf ich heut nacht nicht ein)' was their first convincing chart hit in Germany, also showing the direction the band was taking towards a more polished pop sound.

In the Netherlands, this single did chart. However, Dutch singer Erik Mesie recorded a cover version in Dutch, called 'Zonder jou'. That version peaked at number 8 in the Dutch Top 40 in 1986.

My collection: 7" single no. 3150
Found: October 23, 1999
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Ohne dich (schlaf ich heut nacht nicht ein)' / 'Tochter der Venus'
