Get outta my way - Kylie Minogue

'Get outta my way' was released last week as the second single from Kylie's current album 'Aphrodite'. Like the previous single 'All the lovers', it was released on two cd-singles and a 7" picture disc. It has already peaked at the number 12 spot in the UK singles chart - and is unlikely to get any higher than that.

The song was written and produced by Lucas Secon, Damon Sharpe, Peter Wallevik, Daniel Davidsen and Cutfather, and co-produced by Stuart Price. He said the song wasn't written for any particular artist and at one point four different artists wanted to cut it as their first single before it was claimed by Kylie.

My collection: 7" single no. 4951
Found: Recordstore.co.uk, received October 8, 2010
Cost: 2 pounds
Tracks: 'Get outta my way' / 'Get outta my way (Bimbo Jones piano mix - radio edit)'

All the lovers - Kylie Minogue

You have to have a big ego if you call your album 'Aphrodite' and pose as if you are the Greek goddess of love herself. But then Kylie has been successful for two decades now and then your ego is bound to grow. Fortunately, her tunes aren't half bad these days, as the mentioned album proves.

'All the lovers' was released a few months ago on two different cd-singles and a picture disc 7" single - something one has to applaud in this era where digital downloads seem to rule the world. The Spanish version of the title track is an added bonus not available on the cd-singles, and so this 7" single is worth owning.

My collection: 7" single no. 4921
Found: Recordstore.co.uk, received July 1, 2010
Cost: 3 pounds
Tracks: 'All the lovers' / 'Los amores'

Destination - DT8 featuring Roxanne Wilde

Producer and DJ Darren Tate was born in London on October 22, 1972. In the early Noughties he started working under the pseudonym DT8. The DT8 project involved dance tracks with various guest vocalists.

One of them was Roxanne Wilde, the younger sister of Kim Wilde. The track 'Destination' was released on several different 12" singles - and this is one of them. It was a hit for the two, peaking at number 23 in the UK singles chart in May 2003.

My collection: 12" single no. 439
Found: unknown
Cost: unknown
Tracks: 'Destination (Darren 'DT8' Tate's original mix)' / 'Destination (instrumental)'

Singles bag - John Lennon

In support of Record Store Day, EMI released a limited edition John Lennon vinyl package. It's titled 'Singles bag', but it's not really a bag, but rather a cardboard envelope with three singles, a poster, three postcard and one plastic adaptor in it. It's a real treat for John Lennon fans and those who appreciate his music.

Of course, there isn't really anything new in the bag: all three singles have been released in the past. Still, it is quite wonderful to hear 'Imagine' once again - still the highlight of this bag in my opinion - and of course who could resist the sound of Yoko Ono screaming like an escaped inmate of a psychiatric ward in 'Why'? The poster of the duo in the Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam during their 'Bed-in for peace' action is a nice extra.

My collection: 7" single no. 4837
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, April 17, 2010
Cost: Well... let's just say it wasn't cheap.
Tracks: 'Mother' (John Lennon) / 'Why' (Yoko Ono) // 'Imagine' / 'It's so hard' // 'Watching the wheels' (John Lennon) / 'Yes, I'm your angel' (Yoko Ono)

Last day - Editors

Last year, the Editors released their most recent album 'In this light and on this evening'. Produced by Flood, the sound of the album leaned a lot towards band he'd produced before, such as U2 and Depeche Mode. The first single from the album was 'Papillon', which appears on this single in a beautiful acoustic version.

The track 'Last day' was not included on the album, but most probably recorded during the sessions for it. This single was released exclusively on Record Store Day, April 17, 2010.

My collection: 7" single no. 4836
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, April 17, 2010
Cost: 10 euro
Tracks: 'Last day' / 'Papillon (acoustic live at Studio Brussels)'

Side of the road - Babyshambles

Pete Doherty formed Babyshambles during a hiatus from his band the Libertines in 2003. Although Doherty is mainly famous for his drug abuse, the band was actually able to find some sort of commercial recognition with their debut album 'Down in Albion' (2005). Initially an independent band, they signed with Parlophone in 2007.

On Record Store Day, Parlophone released this limited edition 7" vinyl with two tracks by Babyshambles. Personally, I think the B-side is better than the A-side.

My collection: 7" single no. 4835
Found: La La Land, April 17, 2010
Cost: 6 euro
Tracks: 'Side of the road' / 'UnBiloTitled'

Back to the start - Lily Allen

'Back to the start' is a track on Lily Allen's most recent album, 'It's not me, it's you' (2009). It was getting a lot of airplay in Australia, having peaked at number 21 in the Australian Airplay chart.

On Record Store Day (April 17, 2010), a limited edition 7" vinyl single was released, available only for one day. The single contains this track and the bonus track 'Kabul shit'. It is unlikely that the track will be released as a 'regular' single, but meanwhile, this is a great collector's item.

My collection: 7" single no. 4834
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, April 17, 2010
Cost: 7 euro
Tracks: 'Back to the start' / 'Kabul shit'

Love don't live here - Bananarama

Obviously, when I ordered the 12" single of Bananarama's most recent single 'Love don't live here', I bought the 7" single as well. This 7" single comes with an exclusive new track on the B-side, 'Here comes the rain'.

Producer Ian Masterson was once part of the remix outfit the Trouser Enthusiasts, and it shows on these excellent tracks. Now let's hope that the single turns up in tomorrow's UK singles chart.

Love don't live here - Bananarama

'Love don't live here' was released last Monday as the most recent Bananarama single. Taken from their current album 'Viva', the track was written by Sara Dallin, Keren Woodward and their producer Ian Masterson.

This 12" single features an extended remix of the track, as well as a remix of the album track 'The runner', a cover of the Three Degrees hit from the Seventies. So will this be a hit? I surely hope so, as this is among the girls' best work.

My collection: 12" single no. 536
Found: What records, received April 14, 2010
Cost: 2 pounds
Tracks: 'Love don't live here (Ian Masterson's extended mix)' / 'The runner (Buzz Junkies 12" mix)'

Tell me where it hurts - Garbage

I don't have a lot of Garbage singles, and that's partly because most of their singles were not released on 7" vinyl. And when they were, they are often exceedingly expensive. But I got lucky: I found this 2007 single at a bargain price.

'Tell me where it hurts' was released on white vinyl in 2007. It was a new track on the compilation album 'Absolute Garbage', released while the band were on hiatus. This song was recorded after the band hadn't worked together for eighteen months. It was written around a string arrangement by the band coupled with newly written lyrics and a title that vocalist Manson had come up with a few years prior. Released as a single, it reached number 50 in the UK singles chart.

Tracks: 'Tell me where it hurts' / 'Bad boyfriend (Sting like a bee remix)'

Telephone - Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce

Gaga originally wrote 'Telephone' together with Rodney Jerkins, for Britney Spears. however, Spears' label rejected it and Gaga recorded the song as a collaboration with Beyoncé Knowles for her own album 'The fame monster'. According to Gaga, the telephone addressed in the lyric of the song is not a physical phone, but a person in her head telling her to keep working harder and harder.

This single was released yet again as a picture disc on vinyl. Released in February 2010, 'Telephone' reached number 1 in the UK singles chart, number 20 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 3 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 4735

Bedshaped - Keane

'Bedshaped' was released as the third single from Keane's debut album 'Hopes and fears' in August 2004. According to Tim Rice-Oxley, the song is 'about feeling that you've been 'left behind' by an old friend or lover, and about hoping that you'll be reunited one day so that you can live out the end of your lives together the way you started them (...) a hope that they'll eventually want to get away from the bright lights and come back home. it's a sad and angry song, but also full of hope. I think I'm right in saying that in hospital when someone is ill and has to spend a lot of time in bed they can become 'bedshaped'. It sounds a bit depressing (...) but in the context of the song I wanted to suggest old age and frailty.'

A 7" vinyl single was released as a numbered limited edition in the UK. My copy is number 249.
'Bedshaped' reached number 10 in the UK singles chart and number 26 in the Dutch Top 40.

Cost: 5 pounds
Tracks: 'Bedshaped' / 'Something in me was dying'

American life - Madonna

There's always something quite hypocritical about famous stars who complain about their life as a celebrity. Basically what they're saying is: all this fame and fortune, it doesn't come with fulfillment and happiness, and all the downsides really get you down. Madonna went as far as writing a song about it. 'American life' is Madonna's account of her life up to that point, with all these familiar complaints to go with it. Strangely, she didn't pull out of the music business, which would end all her 'troubles'.

This single version edits out all the 'fuck it's that were included in the unedited version. American people still seem to have trouble listening to certain words. The single, meanwhile, reached number 1 in Canada, Denmark, Italy and Switzerland, while peaking at number 37 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, number 13 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 2 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 4568

Grace Kelly - Mika

'Grace Kelly' was released in January 2007 as the debut single from Mika. It subsequently appeared on his debut album 'Life in cartoon motion'. The song was written as a satire of musicians who try to reinvent themselves to be popular. The lyric 'So I try a little Freddie' is a reference to Queen's Freddie Mercury, to whose singing voice Mika's has been compared.

The single reached number 1 in the UK singles chart and number 4 in the Dutch Top 40. Initally, the song was available as a download only, but a cd-single was subsequently sold in shops. This 7" single was released in the UK only, featuring an inner sleeve which colours in the words 'Grace Kelly', which are cut out from the outer sleeve.

My collection: 7" single no. 4495
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, January 30, 2010
Cost: 2,5 euro
Tracks: 'Grace Kelly' / 'Satellite'

Numb - Pet Shop Boys

'Numb' is one of the few songs recorded by the Pet Shop Boys that wasn't written by themselves. The song was composed by Los Angeles songwriter Diane Warren and originally meant to be a new song on the Pet Shop Boys' 2003 compilation 'PopArt'. The track was finally included on their 2006 album 'Fundamental'.

'Numb' was subsequently released as the third single from the album in a drastically edited, nay, butchered version. The single peaked at number 23 in the UK singles chart.

Found: HMV, London, 2006

Tracks: 'Numb' / 'Party song'

Bad romance - Lady Gaga

'Bad romance' was released in October 2009 as the first single from Lady Gaga's second album 'The fame monster'. The lyric of the song talks about exploring the joys of a bad romance while referencing Alfred Hitchcock films in some of the verses.

The single reached number 1 in the UK singles chart as well as in Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Denmark. The song is in the Dutch Top 40 right now, climbing to number 14 this week. As usual for a Lady Gaga single, 'Bad Romance' was released on a 7" picture disc as well as several other formats.

My collection: 7" single no. 4347
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, December 19, 2009
Cost: 5,9 euro
Tracks: 'Bad romance (radio edit)' / 'Paparazzi (DJ Dan club remix)'

Minimal - Pet Shop Boys

'Minimal' was originally planned to be the first single from the Pet Shop Boys' 2006 album 'Fundamental', but was held back in favour of 'I'm with stupid'. The single finally was released in July 2006. The lyrics are an abstract description of expressions of minimalism, such as 'more is less' and 'an empty box, an open space'. The upbeat, busy instrumentation and production is quite in contrast with minimalism.

The single reached number 19 in the UK singles chart and number 7 in Denmark, but was not successful in other European countries. The B-side 'In private' is a new version of a song originally written for Dusty Springfield. This time the track is recorded as a duet between Neil Tennant and Elton John.

My collection: 7" single no. 3447
Found: HMV, London, 2006
Cost: 2 pounds

I'm with stupid - Pet Shop Boys

The Pet Shop Boys released 'I'm with stupid' in May 2006 as the first single from their Trevor Horn-produced album 'Fundamental'. Though it could be considered a lovesong about a man perceived by the public as a 'moron', the song has been acknowledged as being, on another level, about Tony Blair's relationship with George W. Bush.

The single was released on cd, dvd, various download formats and this 7" single. Although it was released in a 'normal' picture sleeve, it actually contains a picture disc. The single peaked at number 8 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 3446
Found: Record fair, 2006
Cost: 6 euro
Tracks: 'I'm with stupid' / 'Girls don't cry'

Clocks - Coldplay

I found this white label 12" single during a holiday in London. With no description of the tracks, I decided to give it a spin on the record players that were available in the shop, and decided within a minute that I wanted to have this. Three remixes of the Coldplay track 'Clocks'... it was simply too interesting.

Of course, these tracks were also available online as MP3's, but nothing beats the original - especially when it's on vinyl. The downside of these white labels is that there is no track listing. So I still have no clue what track 1 is.

My collection: 12" single no. 519
Found: HMV, London, 2003
Cost: 8 pounds
Tracks: 'Clocks (remix)', 'Clocks (Royksopp remix)' / 'Clocks (Cosmos remix)'

Life in technicolor II - Coldplay

'Life in technicolor' appears as an instrumental track on Coldplay's album 'Viva la vida', but this vocal version was actually already recorded at the time as well. It was finally released on the mini album 'Prospekt's March'.

The single 'Life in Technicolor II' was released as digital download and 7" vinyl only in February 2009. It reached number 28 in the UK singles chart and number 15 in the Dutch Top 40.
