Come-Comedie - Nicole Josy & Hugo Sigal

Nicole Josy and Hugo Sigal represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 (with 'Goeiemorgen morgen') and in 1973 (with 'Baby baby'). In 1972 they didn't compete, because in Belgium the Flemish and Walloon broadcasters take turns when they represent their country. Still, the Eurovision bug was scratching the duo, and so they decided to record a Flemish cover of the French entry of 1972: 'Come-comedie', originally performed by Betty Mars.

The lyrics for this version were written by Ernie Frank, a prolific songwriter in Belgium during the Sixties and Seventies.

Goeiemorgen morgen - Nicole & Hugo

When I bought this single (along with a few others) the shop owner looked at the sleeve and said 'This is one of Belgium's finest Eurovision entries ever, isn't it?'. I could tell he meant what he said and it wasn't what I expected to hear. Eurovision is often met with ridicule, but the ridicule reserved for Nicole & Hugo's later entry Baby Baby was a especially harsh kind of ridicule.

It has to be said, however, that 'Goeiemorgen morgen' ('Good morning, morning') has a beautiful melody and the duo did a very decent performance of the song - considering the Seventies context of course. It's a shame, then, that they ended up on 14th place in a field of 18 competitors when they competed in the Contest in 1971.

Baby baby - Nicole & Hugo

Nicole & Hugo's 'Baby baby' could be the biggest surprise of the day for me. When I bought the single yesterday, I had a vivid memory of a ridiculous couple dress in purple jumpsuits singing a song slightly too loud with strange expressions on their face. But ridiculous clothing aside, this is actually a very good song! The video is included here for your pleasure, but listen to the track first - you will be pleasantly surprised.

Probably thanks to their appearance, the song ended 17th at the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest - out of 17 competitors. Recent reviews have described it as 'a relatively tacky song' and 'a Eurovision turkey'. But personally I think the music on this track is impressive. Although the lyric is indeed pretty bad...
