Wake me early in the morning - Mary Roos

In 1972 Mary Roos represented Germany during the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Nur die Liebe lässt uns leben'. She also recorded the song in English. The song 'Wake me early in the morning' is contained on this single, along with a B-side that is also translated. 

I bought the French version 'Nous' just a month ago, and it's funny how the singles of these two versions are housed in sleeves with a similar design - but with totally different photographs. This is the kind of thing I really like about having a physical collection, of course.

Nous - Mary Roos

'Nur die Liebe läßt uns leben' sang Mary Roos in 1972, and it gave Germany an honourable third place at that year's Eurovision Song Contest. Such was the success of the song that she decided to record it in English, French and Italian as well. 

This is the French version, released in Germany by her record company as 'Nous'. The language always sounds beautiful, but this version lacks the engaging nature of the original version.

Aufrecht geh'n - Mary Roos

'Aufrecht geh'n' ('Walk tall') was the German entry in the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest, performed by Mary Roos. The song was composed by Michael Reinecke with lyrics by Michael Kunze, who previously had written the lyrics to Silver Convention's 1977 entry 'Telegram'. This was also Mary Roos' second Eurovision entry; she had represented Germany at the 1972 Contest with 'Nur die Liebe läßt uns leben', which finished third in a field of 18 competitors.

Obviously, the Germans were hoping for a similar result in 1984. But this time around Mary Roos wasn't so lucky: she finished 13th in a field of 19 competitors.

Nur die Liebe läßt uns leben - Mary Roos

Mary Roos was born as Rosemarie Schwab on January 9, 1949. She started singing at a very early age and recorded her first song when she was 9 years old.

In 1972, she represented Germany during the Eurovision Song Contest after a rather controversial win during the national final. Mary stated that she did not expect to win at all and that she was already removing her make-up when she was called back on stage. After the reprise of the winning song, she was booed off stage. However, at the Eurovision Song Contest she finished third. The single reached number 17 in the German singles chart. The B-side of this single is a German language cover of 'You can't hurry love', the famous Supremes track from 1966.
