Diamonds and pearls - Prince

'Diamonds and pearls' is the title track from Prince's 1991 album, recorded with the New Power Generation and featuring the powerful vocals of band member Rosie Gaines. The repeated lyric 'If I gave U diamonds and pearls, would U be a happy boy or a girl?' echoes the lyrics 'I'll buy U diamonds and pearls only if U're a good girl' from Prince's 1982 song, 'International lover'.

The track was released as the album's third single in November 1991. It reached number 25 in the UK singles chart and number 15 in the Dutch Top 40.

Purple rain - Prince

'Purple rain' was the title track from Prince's 1984 album. In order to be released as a single, the song was shortened from 8:45 to 4:05. It's quite a shame really, because the majestic guitar solo is totally deleted from the edited track, leaving just a quite boring ballad. The 12" single did feature the full length track - but I found that out after buying this single. Still, I don't regret buying the single, because it was pressed on purple vinyl.

'Purple rain' has become one of Prince's signature songs, reaching number 1 in the Dutch Top 40, number 2 in the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 8 in the UK singles chart.

Money don't matter 2 night - Prince and the New Power Generation

Personally, I think Prince perfected his craft with this particular song. It sounds very Prince, but the lyric has more substance than any other Prince song. It deals directly with money, poverty and greed - both on a personal and a political level.

The song is notable for its promotional video, directed by Spike Lee. Featuring a poverty-stricken African-American family, with no shots of Prince at all, it was considered overly political and not 'MTV-friendly'. A second version was issued, which included footage of the song being performed by Prince and The New Power Generation. The single reached number 7 in the Dutch Top 40 and number 19 in the UK singles chart.

Cream - Prince and the New Power Generation

According to Prince, he wrote the song 'Cream' while he was standing in front of a mirror. It was included on Prince & the New Power Generation's 1991 album 'Diamonds and pearls'.

Released as the second single from the album, it reached number 1 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, number 15 in the UK singles chart and number 4 in the Dutch Top 40.

Raspberry beret - Prince and the Revolution

'Raspberry beret' was released as the second single from Prince & the Revolution's 1985 album 'Around the world in a day'. Back then, Prince was a Big Thing, and after the phenomenal success of 'Purple rain', this new album was highly anticipated. Although the song was originally recorded in 1982, Prince drastically reworked it with The Revolution to give it more of an international sound.

The lyric of the song tells of a teenage romance and first sexual experience with a girl who wears the titular hat. The single peaked at number 25 in the UK singles chart and number 19 in the Dutch Top 40.

Controversy - Prince

'Controversy' was originally released in 1981 as a single from Prince's album of the same name. The song addresses certain rumours about him, particularly rumours about his sexual preference, and how he couldn't understand why people were even interested in such facts. On its original release, the single charted in the US and Australia only.

When the record company released a compilation album in 1993, 'Controversy' was re-released in the UK. Besides a double cd-single release, this picture disc was also available. This time around, the single peaked at number 5 in the UK, Prince's first top 10 hit in that country since 'My name is Prince' a year before.

Glam slam - Prince

'Glam slam' was the second single taken from Prince's 1988 album 'Lovesexy'. The title originates from the sexual quote 'Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am,' which is an allusion to the popularized line from glam-rock star David Bowie's 'Suffragette City'.

In late 1989, Prince opened a nightclub in Minneapolis named after the song. After eight years of frustration he sold it to new owners, who renamed it The Quest. The club had since become one of the premier nightspots, rivaling First Avenue as a live music venue, before closing in 2006.

Alphabet st. - Prince

'Alphabet st.' was the first single from Prince's 1988 album 'Lovesexy'. It peaked at number 9 in the UK and number 5 in the Netherlands. The packaging for this single was quite unique: there was no real sleeve, just a transparent sleeve with a sticker displaying the artist's and track name on it. The next single 'Glam slam' would be packaged in the same way.

The B-side is essentially an instrumental version of 'Alphabet st.' with an added rap by Cat Glover, who choreographed and appeared in several of Prince's videos and his concert film 'Sign 'O' the times', traveled with him as a backing vocalist and dancer on the Sign 'O' the Times Tour and Lovesexy World Tour. Following her work with Prince, she released the EP 'Catwoman' in 1989.

Gett off - Prince and the New Power Generation

When someone sings '52 positions in a one night stand', you know you're dealing with a sexually-charged track. And so it is...

'Gett off' was the first single taken from Prince's 1991 album 'Diamonds and pearls'. The track was a last-minute addition to the album, replacing 'Horny pony', the song that appears on the B-side of this single. The single peaked at number 4 in the UK and number 21 in America.

My collection: 7" single no. 3628
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, April 18, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Gett off' / 'Horny pony'
