Chorus - Erasure

'Chorus' was the first single from Erasure's 1991 album of the same name. A track with an environmental theme, it was produced by Martyn Phillips and written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. The single reached number 3 in the UK singles chart and became a top 10 hit in Denmark and Ireland.

The B-side track 'Over the rainbow' is notable for its lyric namechecking the members of the Swedish group Abba. Erasure would record a tribute to that group the next year, in the form of the 'Abba-esque' EP.

My collection: 7" single no. 1501
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, August 6, 1991
Cost: 3,5 guilders

Who needs love like that - Erasure

I took the bus (oh, how I miss those open double deckers from the old days!) from Notting Hill Gate to Oxford Street, in order to get to Berwick Street, where my record hunting would continue. I was aware of one more Music & Video Exchange down the road, but I stopped underway for a new shop, where I eventually found three singles, although two of them I already had - but these were picture disc editions (more about that later on this blog).

The one new title I found was 'Who needs love like that', the debut single by Erasure. Whereas Vince Clarke had a lot of success with Depeche Mode and Yazoo, this single was considered a flop, as it only reached number 55 in the UK singles chart. It was 1985. More than two decades later, we know how successful Erasure turned out to be...

Crackers International EP - Erasure

In November 1988, Erasure released 'Crackers International', an EP with four self-produced tracks. 'Stop' was the lead track of the EP, with 'She won't be home' pushing the Christmas theme for the end of the year.

In the UK singles chart, the EP equalled the success of their biggest hit to date, 'Sometimes', reaching number 2. In the rest of Europe, the EP did not chart.

Star - Erasure

'Star' was the fourth and last single taken from Erasure's 1989 album 'Wild!'. It is a straightforward dance track with disco elements, written by Andy Bell and Vince Clarke. The single version is a remix of the album version.

It was Erasure's 12th consecutive Top 20 hit on the UK singles chart, peaking at number 11. In Germany, the single peaked at number 23.

It doesn't have to be - Erasure

'It doesn't have to be' was released as the second single from Erasure's second album 'The circus' (1987). Written by the band members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, the track features Clarke's signature synthesizer programming along with a prominent acoustic guitar. Bell's lyrics touch upon patching up an argument between two people in a relationship.

The single peaked at number 12 in the UK singles chart and number 16 in the German singles chart. In the Netherlands, it was only a minor success, peaking at number 38 in the Dutch Top 40.
The single's B-side, 'In the hall of the mountain king', is an excerpt from Grieg's Peer Gynt suite as performed by Vince Clarke.

Sometimes - Erasure

Although I always thought this was Erasure's debut single, it is actually their fourth release. It was their first top 10 hit in the UK, reaching number 2, and their first hit in the Netherlands, peaking at number 3. The song became a huge international hit

Written by band members Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, 'Sometimes' typifies Erasure's signature sound — an uptempo, dance-oriented pop tune accentuated by Clarke's analogue synthesizers and Bell's soulful vocals.

Storm chaser - Erasure

Erasure released the 'Storm chaser' EP in September 2007. While the cd-single contained eight remixes of five different tracks plus a duet with Cyndi Lauper, the 7" single only had two tracks, making it a single, not an EP.

Released as a picture disc, the single still did not chart in the UK - or any other country for that matter.

Found: eBay, received February 2, 2009
Cost: 3 pounds
Tracks: 'Storm in a teacup (single version)' / 'Sucker for love (edit)'

I could fall in love with you - Erasure

'I could fall in love with you' was released in April 2007 as the first single from Erasure's 13th studio album 'Light at the end of the world'. It was the first 7" single release by Erasure since 'Run to the sun' (1994). The single peaked at number 21 in the UK singles chart.

Vince Clarke explained about the song: 'Before we started this album, I was really keen for it not to be mid-tempo - I'm having a mid-tempo crisis! Our albums seem to have got slower and slower, so I started searching for classic funk or disco bass lines, put some ideas together with chord changes and bass lines underneath, and emailed them to Andy for him to sing over the top. The song, like this album, is quite 'up' and uptempo because we're both in good spaces right now.'

My collection: 7" single no. 3498
Found: eBay, received December 23, 2008
Cost: 3 pounds
Tracks: 'I could fall in love with you (Jeremy Wheatley radio mix)' / 'I like it'
